The Indian men’s cricket team continued their strong performance in the 2026 T20 World Cup, keeping alive their dream of achieving something very special. India are aiming to defend their title, win a record third T20 World Cup trophy and lift the cup as hosts. So far, they are moving confidently in that direction. After comfortable wins against USA and Namibia in their first two Group A matches, India travelled to Colombo for the much-awaited clash against Pakistan. As always, the rivalry between the two nations created huge excitement. The match was surrounded by hype, strong emotions, and heavy media attention. However, the drama on the field did not last long. India delivered a powerful performance and defeated Pakistan by 61 runs in another one-sided contest in recent ICC tournaments. With this win, India improved their head-to-head record against Pakistan in T20 World Cups to 8-1. India qualify for Super 8 stage, Pakistan still in the race Led by Suryakumar Yadav, India have now qualified for the Super 8 stage after winning all their Group A matches. Their strong form has made them one of the favourites to win the tournament. Pakistan, on the other hand, still has work to do. They must beat Namibia in their final group match to qualify for the Super 8 and continue their campaign. If they manage to win, they could join India in the next round. This raises an important question for fans, can India and Pakistan meet again in this tournament? Understanding the tournament format The 2026 T20 World Cup features 20 teams divided into four groups, Group A, B, C, and D with five teams in each group. The top two teams from each group advance to the Super 8 stage. In the Super 8, the eight qualified teams are divided into two groups of four teams each Group 1 and Group 2. Teams play only against others in their own group. The top two teams from each Super 8 group move on to the semi-finals. Pre-seeding system explained for the Super 8 stage Before the tournament began, the top eight ranked T20I teams were pre-seeded for the Super 8 stage. This means their positions in the next round were already decided if they qualified. India were placed as X1, Australia as X2, West Indies as X3, and South Africa as X4. These four teams would form Group 1 if all qualify. England (Y1), New Zealand (Y2), Pakistan (Y3), and Sri Lanka (Y4) were placed in the other bracket, which would form Group 2. If any of these teams fail to qualify, the team that advances from their group will take their position. Can India and Pakistan meet in the Super 8? The answer is no. Under the current pre-seeding system, India and Pakistan are placed in separate Super 8 groups. Since teams only face others within their own group at this stage, a rematch between the two sides in the Super 8 is not possible. What about the semi-finals or final? An India-Pakistan clash can still happen, but only in the knockout stage. In the semi-finals, the top team from Group 1 will face the second-placed team from Group 2, and the top team from Group 2 will play the second-placed team from Group 1. So, if one team finishes first in its group and the other finishes second in the other group, they could meet in the semi-final. If both teams top their groups or both finish second, they would be on opposite sides of the draw and could only meet in the final. An India-Pakistan final is also possible if both teams reach the semi-finals and win their matches. The two nations have met only once in a T20 World Cup final in 2007 when the tournament was known as the ICC World T20. For now, there will be no rematch in the Super 8. But if results go their way, fans could still witness another high-voltage India-Pakistan clash at the business end of the tournament, likely in Colombo, which is expected to host the knockout matches.
