All is certainly not well in Pakistan after the humiliating defeat to India in the T20 World Cup. While the atmosphere within the Pakistan cricket team is expected to be that of unrest after the 61-run loss to arch-rivals India, things are tense among those in power in the country. Asim Munir, who is the Field Marshal of Pakistan’s Army that holds a significant amount of power in the country, is reportedly not very happy with Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi after the Salman Ali Agha-led side was thrashed by India in the T20 World Cup. India defeated Pakistan comprehensively in what was a one-sided contest to qualify for the Super 8. Why is Asim Munir ‘upset’ with Mohsin Naqvi after Pakistan’s loss to India? According to a report in News18, Munir’s unhappiness with Naqvi is not just because of Pakistan’s loss to India but also regarding a military reference that the PCB chief had made in the past. In a Pakistan Super League (PSL) press conference not many days ago, Naqvi had name-dropped Munir while responding to a question. When asked if the ICC had threatened PCB with possible sanctions for initially boycotting the India match, Naqvi had replied, “I am not scared of threats and neither is the government. And you know our Field Marshal.” This comment has reportedly not gone down too well with Munir, as his name was dragged into a cricketing press conference, without obtaining any military clearance. To top it off, India’s thrashing of Pakistan has worsened the landscape in Pakistan, with Munir reaching out to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. Asim Munir reaches out to Shehbaz Sharif after Pakistan’s loss Munir, according to the News18 report, reached out to Sharif through the latter’s Military Secretary. Munir reportedly expressed his unhappiness over being dragged into a cricket discussion and also said to have pointed out that things in the PCB aren’t handled well under Naqvi’s leadership. The report also adds that Naqvi’s future as PCB chief might be in doubt now in the current circumstances. Naqvi had assumed charge of the PCB in 2023, succeeding Zaka Ashraf. Shoaib Akhtar calls Mohsin Naqvi ‘Jaahil’ on live TV Former Pakistan cricketer Shoaib Akhtar lashed out at Naqvi and called him a ‘jaahil’ (uneducated or ignorant) on live TV. While speaking on ABP, Akhtar called out Naqvi and blamed him for Pakistan’s struggles. “Now one guy who does not know anything has become the Pakistan Cricket Board’s chairman. How will the team run now? You’ve made him a superstar — he can’t win a single match… The biggest crime in the world is to give a big job to an incompetent and ignorant person,” he said.
