South Africa defeated New Zealand by seven wickets in Ahmedabad on 14 February. Chasing 176, South Africa produced a dominant batting effort to get past the finish line in just 17.1 overs, riding on captain Aiden Markram’s 44-ball 86. With this result, South Africa continued their winning run in the tournament. New Zealand, on the other hand, were beaten for the first time in this tournament. The South African captain made an absolute mockery of the 176-run chase, hitting the New Zealand bowlers all around the park. The right-hander got to his fifty off just 19 balls, becoming the fastest South African to score a T20 World Cup half-century, breaking a 10-year record set by Quinton de Kock. The right-hander struck eight fours and four sixes and his 86* is the highest score by a South African in a T20 World Cup match. Quinton de Kock (20), Ryan Rickelton (21), Dewald Brevis (21) and David Miller (24*) made important contributions. One of the highlights for New Zealand in the second innings was Daryl Mitchell’s excellent catch to dismiss Ryan Rickelton. The New Zealand cricketer took the catch and threw the ball up, thinking he could go over. And he returned just in time to complete the catch.
