The death of Roshni Shukla, a BJP leader and former assistant to Shahdol BJP MP Himadri Singh, has taken a dark turn—from a suspected road accident to a chilling murder mystery. Eyewitnesses allege she was deliberately run over multiple times by SUVs on a public road, leading to her death. Seven days after the incident, the Rewa Superintendent of Police formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the death case, which has sent shockwaves across Madhya Pradesh. After Roshni’s death, the Dainik Bhaskar team reached the crime scene and tried to understand the entire incident. Read the report of the entire incident as told by eyewitnesses, family, and police… Run over repeatedly in public view According to eyewitness accounts, Roshni was first hit by one vehicle and knocked to the ground. A second SUV then ran over her, while the driver allegedly moved the vehicle back and forth, crushing her repeatedly until she stopped breathing. By the time people reached the spot, most parts of her body were mutilated. It took nearly 45 minutes and 15 people to lift the overturned vehicle and pull her out from underneath it. A woman eyewitness said, “I have never seen such a brutal death in my life.” ‘Numbers can’t describe the pain’: Family’s grief Roshni’s father said, “I dreamed of lifting my daughter’s wedding palanquin, but instead had to carry her bier on my shoulders.” Her mother, Tara Shukla, broke down while questioning claims of women’s safety. “It would have been better if I had died. I raised my daughter to be independent, only for her to be crushed on the road like this,” she said. Her brother Prakash Shukla revealed that Roshni had earlier hinted that her life was in danger. “She used to say some people were after her. On the last day too, she called me to pick her up. Before I could reach, she was brutally run over.” From Makar Sankranti sweets to death On January 14, Makar Sankranti, Roshni—who lived in Belwa village, around 50 km from Rewa—received a call from the operator of a dalia (porridge) plant, whose additional responsibility had recently been assigned to her. She had returned a day earlier from MP Himadri Singh’s Delhi residence. The caller invited her to the plant to collect festive sweets. Roshni took a bus to Rewa, stayed at the plant for about half an hour, and informed her family she was returning. Around 8:45 pm, she got down at Belwa Mod bus stop and called her brother, asking him to come pick her up as it was dark. Harassment before the attack As Roshni walked ahead from the bus stop, she noticed two Bolero SUVs parked nearby. When she passed them, a youth inside one vehicle allegedly made lewd remarks. Roshni reportedly warned him, saying, “If you do this again, I’ll hit you with my slipper.” Soon after, both vehicles began following her—one from the front, the other from behind. Roshni ran in panic, but after some distance, the vehicles sped ahead, briefly giving her a sense of relief. Chased, trapped and crushed As Roshni neared a house belonging to Sunita Singh, one of the Boleros suddenly returned at high speed and ran her over. A second Bolero, reportedly without a number plate, followed and crushed her again. Eyewitnesses said the driver repeatedly reversed and moved forward over her body until the vehicle overturned, trapping Roshni underneath. Her screams eventually fell silent. One of the vehicles briefly returned in a “filmy style,” parked in a nearby field, and then fled when locals rushed to the spot. Eyewitness accounts: ‘I still shudder’ Eyewitness Ramlakhan Adivasi said Roshni was still breathing when they reached her. “Her spine was broken, one leg fractured at three places, her uterus was destroyed. No part of her body was intact,” he said. Another eyewitness, Rambutan Rawat, said, “I cleaned her face and held her head in my lap. I didn’t know her, but she felt like my own daughter.” Sunita Singh, near whose house the incident occurred, claimed the SUVs had been roaming the area for nearly four hours prior to the incident, suggesting possible reconnaissance. Political career and Work profile Roshni began her career working with former Union Minister Faggan Singh Kulaste, later handling key responsibilities during elections. She was introduced to MP Himadri Singh through Devendra Dubey and subsequently managed the MP’s office in Delhi and Shahdol. Her father said she had recently been entrusted with overseeing a dalia plant as well, requiring her to travel between locations. Police: Both accident and murder angles being probed Station House Officer Deepak Tiwari said police are still identifying the vehicles involved. “We are investigating whether this is a hit-and-run or a case of murder. The vehicle ownership and driver identities are yet to be established,” he said. SDOP Umesh Prajapati confirmed that a case has been registered and investigation is underway. Additional SP Sandeep Mishra said eyewitness statements are being recorded and evidence collected. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed under orders of Rewa SP Shailendra Singh to conduct a detailed probe. A case that raises alarming questions What began as a reported road accident has now exposed disturbing questions about women’s safety, premeditated violence, and accountability. As public anger grows, the key question remains: Who killed Roshni Shukla, and why?
