A wave of happiness will mark Republic Day celebrations at Gwalior Central Jail, with nine prisoners — including one woman — set to be released on January 26 for good conduct, officials said. Acting on orders from the jail headquarters, the prison administration has completed all formalities for the release and informed the families of the prisoners. All nine have completed 14 years of imprisonment in murder cases and were found eligible for remission based on their conduct. A special programme will be organised inside the jail on the occasion of the 77th Republic Day. After the ceremony, the prisoners due for release will be served a meal and formally bid farewell with a shawl and coconut as a mark of respect. Their family members are expected to be present outside the jail to receive them. Jail Superintendent Vidit Sarvaiya said the prisoners had shown exemplary behaviour during their incarceration and had also assisted fellow inmates. “Over the years, their conduct and willingness to help others left a positive impression. They will be given an emotional farewell by other prisoners as well,” he said. He added that releasing prisoners with good conduct on Republic Day is a long-standing tradition at the Central Jail. “This initiative is aimed at encouraging reform and promoting disciplined and responsible behaviour among inmates,” Mr. Sarvaiya said. Prisoners to be released: The tradition of Republic Day releases will continue this year as well, reinforcing the focus on reformation within the prison system.
