A horrifying incident unfolded in Ambah town of Morena district on late Sunday night when 10 to 12 armed dacoits stormed the residence of Kinnar Guru Rabia and unleashed terror for nearly one hour and 45 minutes. The assailants not only looted cash and jewellery but also attempted sexual assault, forcing the victims to remove their clothes and subjecting them to obscene acts. The four kinnars present in the house are still traumatised and shudder while recounting the incident. 2-storey house surrounded by fields Guru Rabia, around 30 years old, lives in a two-storey house built on a 2,500 sq ft plot near Dauhari Road. The house is surrounded by fields on all sides. She resides there with her disciples Shri Sharma, Radhika and Riya. On Sunday afternoon, a Dainik Bhaskar team visited the house to assess the situation on the ground. Jewellery and cash kept for Delhi conference At around 3 pm on Sunday, Guru Rabia was sitting in the prayer room, wearing a red nightdress and a black shawl. Despite repeated requests from her disciples to eat something, she refused, clapping and beating her head in distress. She said they were supposed to leave for Delhi the same day to attend a major kinnar conference being held at Ramlila Maidan in Rohini. For the event, they had taken out gold and silver jewellery along with cash. On Saturday evening, after returning home around 6 pm with alms collected during the day, they performed evening prayers and had dinner before retiring to their rooms. Armed men entered at gunpoint around 2.45 am Guru Rabia said it was around 2.45 am when she heard knocking at the door. Radhika’s voice came from outside, calling her to open it. As soon as the door was unlocked, armed men barged inside. One dacoit pressed a country-made pistol against Rabia’s temple, while another pointed a gun at Radhika’s head. They threatened to kill them and demanded the cupboard keys. The gang filled bags with 20–22 tolas of gold jewellery, silver and cash. Attempted sexual assault and obscene acts Rabia was dragged into the hall, where she saw all three disciples tied with ropes, guns pointed at them. Her hands and feet were also tied. The assailants made derogatory remarks, questioning their gender identity, forcibly removed their clothes and carried out obscene acts. They bit their bodies and molested their private parts while the victims pleaded for mercy. Two of the dacoits were calling each other “Fauji” and “Ravi”. The use of the term “gariya” for men deeply unsettled Rabia, as it is commonly used by the transgender community. Looted valuables and locked victims inside After committing the crimes, the dacoits took gold, silver, cash and all four mobile phones. They claimed the phones would be found under the car later. Rabia was pinned face-down on the bed, covered with a blanket, and the door was latched from outside. For 30 to 40 minutes, all four remained trapped before managing to untie each other. They exited through a second door and sought help from residents of Rathore Colony around 4.30 am. Police were informed via Dial 112. Entry through the roof using ladder and gas cutter When police and neighbours returned to the house around 5 am, it was discovered that the miscreants had climbed onto the roof using a ladder. They used a gas cutter to break the lock and entered the hall where Riya and Shri were sleeping. Mrs Sharma recalled that masked men woke them, put a gun to Riya’s mouth when she screamed, tied their hands and feet, and covered them with a blanket. Gold meant to uphold Ambah’s honour Rabia explained that the jewellery and approximately ₹4 lakh in cash were meant to uphold Ambah’s honour at the Delhi conference. Among kinnars, wearing gold symbolises prestige for both the individual and their city. She said the gold was not purchased but received as gifts on auspicious occasions. Guru Rabia’s influence across 200 villages Guru Rabia oversees around 200 villages across 50 panchayats in the Ambah region. After the death of her guru, Kajal Kinnar, in 2020, she was formally initiated as Guru. Her community earns a livelihood through blessings and alms, making the incident all the more distressing.
