ICC (International Cricket Council) chairman Jay Shah hailed Rohit Sharma, calling him ‘humara kaptaan’ (our captain) while speaking at the Reliance Foundation’s ‘United in Triumph’ event on 5 January. Shah recalled India’s two ICC title wins under Rohit’s captaincy. Rohit will go down as one of India’s most successful captains. India won the 2024 T20 World Cup and the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy titles under his captaincy. Later in 2025, he was removed as ODI captain with Shubman Gill succeeding him. Jay Shah’s special praise for Rohit Sharma While addressing the audience at the event, the ICC chief referred to Rohit as captain, despite him no longer being the skipper of Team India in any format. Speaking in Hindi, Shah pointed at Rohit seated among the audience and said, “Humara kaptaan idhar bethe hai. Main toh kaptaan hi bolunga because aapne do trophy jit ke layi, isi liye,” Shah added. The reactions of actors Shah Rukh Khan, Varun Dhawan and India women’s team captain Harmanpreet Kaur, seated nearby, were also caught on camera as Shah praised Rohit. The ICC chairman also spoke of India’s heartbreaking loss to Australia in the 2023 ODI World Cup final and recalled his remarks later in February 2024 in Rajkot, where he had said India would win hearts as well as the trophy (T20 World Cup).
Rohit Sharma, one of India’s most successful captains In 2024, Rohit ended India’s long wait of 11 years to win an ICC trophy when he guided the Men in Blue to the T20 World Cup title in Barbados. Next year, Rohit added another ICC trophy to his cabinet with India winning the Champions Trophy. India won both the tournaments, unbeaten.

With these title wins, Rohit became just the third Indian captain to clinch an ICC title after Kapil Dev and MS Dhoni. Sourav Ganguly had also won the ICC Champions Trophy in 2002 but had shared the award with Sri Lanka after the final was washed out.
