E. coli contamination detected in Bhopal groundwater sources:Four samples test positive for bacteria as sewage, garbage dump and ageing pipelines worsen Bhopal crisis

Groundwater in Bhopal’s Khanugaon, Adampur Cantonment, and Vajpayee Nagar has been found contaminated, with all four collected samples failing safety tests. E. coli bacteria were detected in the water, the same pathogen responsible for the outbreak in Indore’s Bhagirathpura, where 20 deaths have been reported so far. Meanwhile, Bhopal Municipal Corporation officials maintain that the contamination is limited to groundwater and not the municipal supply, and its use has been prohibited. MLA Atif Akeel and the councillor representative Mohd Zaheer visited Khanugaon just two days ago. Despite this, nearly 2,000 residents of Khanugaon continue to consume the contaminated water. Rehana Sultan is the corporator of the ward where Khanugaon is located. Corporator representative Mohd. Zaheer himself made a video of sewage flowing into the well. Meanwhile, Congress MLA Aqeel also severely reprimanded the municipal corporation engineers. Zaheer said that sewage water has been flowing into the well in the Khanugaon area for several days. From there, water is distributed to approximately 2000 people. A written complaint was made 15 days ago, but the problem was not resolved. As a result, people continued to drink contaminated water. In this matter, Municipal Corporation officials say that water is not being supplied from groundwater-based water sources in Adampur Cantonment, Bajpai Nagar, and Khanugaon areas. People in these areas should not use water from groundwater sources. A total of 250 water samples were tested on Wednesday. Bacteria were found in 4 of these samples. Investigations so far have revealed that there are about 22 wards in Bhopal where 400 kilometers of water pipelines are laid alongside sewage lines. This includes a population of approximately 5 lakh in large areas such as Navibagh and the Govindpura industrial area. It is said that these iron pipelines have completed their lifespan. Due to this, most leakages occur here. However, the corporation would need about 500 crore rupees to replace them. Out of 2.71 lakh tap connections in the city, about 75 thousand tap connections need their lines replaced. Additionally, under Amrit-2, work is underway to lay 750 kilometers of new water pipelines in the city. The areas where pipelines have become old are – Babu Jagjivan Ram, Nariyal Kheda, Gitanjali in Zone 3; JP Nagar, Motilal Nehru, Ibrahim Ganj in Zone 4; Royal Market, Bagh Munshi Hussain, Shahjahanabad, Lal Bahadur Shastri, Moti Masjid in Zone 5. Besides these, leakages are also most common in Islampur, Govindpura Industrial Area, Rajiv Gandhi, Bhopal Memorial, Bhanpur in Zone 16; and Badwai, Chhola, Rusalli, Karond, and Navibagh, Devki Nagar, Ambedkar Nagar, and Choukse Nagar in Zone 17. Bhopal will need 514 million liters of drinking water every day in 2040. To meet this demand, 448 crore rupees are being spent to build the network in three years. Currently, 450 million liters of water are supplied daily as per requirement. Currently, water supply in the city covers 85% of the area. These are all legal colonies. The municipal corporation does not supply water to illegal colonies. Currently, there are a total of 2.71 lakh connections, which will increase to 3.10 lakh. This will enable the supply of 514 million liters of water every day.
