Tension flared late Friday night in Jabalpur’s Kotwali police station area after a dispute over abusive language escalated into a violent clash outside Badkul Hotel. The situation worsened rapidly, drawing hundreds of people from the Jain community onto streets and forcing heavy police deployment. According to police sources, the incident occurred near Bada Fuhara around midnight. As soon as information reached the authorities, personnel from 8-10 police stations rushed to the spot. Police later carried out a lathi charge to disperse the crowd. Several police personnel were reportedly injured during the chaos. See the entire sequence of events in pictures… Allegations against hotel manager Members of the Jain community allege that Badkul Hotel manager Rohit Rajput misbehaved with them. When Rajkumar Jain and others present at the hotel objected, Rajput allegedly made a phone call. Soon after, four to five youths arrived in a car carrying baseball bats and allegedly assaulted people standing there. Following this, news of the attack spread within the Jain community, prompting hundreds of people to gather at the spot. In the ensuing violence, associates of the hotel manager were attacked, forcing the youths to take shelter inside a nearby shop to save themselves. Community alleges targeted attack Members of the Jain community claim that their people were attacked without provocation. They allege that while they were eating at the hotel, some individuals used abusive language, and when they objected, they were attacked with baseball bats and sticks. Anger over police action The community has also accused the police of acting unfairly. They allege that instead of taking action against the attackers, the police used a lathi charge on community members. According to them, the administration’s actions disturbed the otherwise peaceful atmosphere of the city. Over 50 people involved, says resident Resident Abhishek claimed that more than 50 people were involved in the clash. He further alleged that when he informed the police about the incident, a case was registered against him instead. Police officials, meanwhile, say the situation is under control and further investigation into the incident is underway.
