In Mauganj, 24-year-old newlywed Karuna Dwivedi committed suicide by hanging on the morning of December 24. Her body was found in a room at home. In a 10-page suicide note, Karuna blamed her husband Shivam Mishra and mother-in-law for her death. She wrote, ‘I am fed up with daily harassment. Mother, I will never forgive the son.’ Karuna was married to Shivam Mishra of Badhaiya Bhaluha village on May 8, 2025. Speaking to Dainik Bhaskar, her brother Kuldeep Dwivedi said her in-laws started harassing her just 15 days after the wedding, demanding dowry, including potatoes and onions. Karuna had returned to her maternal home a month ago, saying she would not go back. Betrayal by those close Karuna wrote in her note that she had considered her husband a partner in joy and sorrow but felt betrayed. She expressed despair over constant quarrels, abuse, and lack of affection, stating she had no one to share her sorrow with. Tormented beyond endurance She described her mental anguish, saying the constant torture left her feeling worthless and drove her to contemplate suicide. She specifically blamed her mother-in-law for hatred and mistreatment. She said, Some mothers-in-law hates their daughters-in-law; my mother-in-law is exactly like that. She ruined my life. I will not forgive both mother and son. Mother-in-law’s role Karuna wrote that her mother-in-law repeatedly criticized her marriage and compared her unfavorably with other girls. She recounted being physically abused and emotionally humiliated, often being told she was a mistake and unwanted. Husband’s brutality and starvation She described incidents where her husband slapped her, refused her basic care, and prioritized money over her well-being. She wrote, I apologised by holding his feet, but my husband slapped me four times so hard that my earring came off. Even if I die, I will not forgive him. Financial exploitation Karuna explained that her husband made her life miserable over financial matters and dowry, leaving her feeling trapped. She noted in her suicide letter that ‘I cannot live with a person with such a cheap mentality. You wanted money, which you didn’t get, so you made my life hell.’ Feeling isolated and helpless She described being shunned by her husband and family even after returning to her maternal home. She wrote, ‘I messaged my husband. He took a screenshot and sent it to his father and grandmother… Life has become so difficult that nothing feels right except suicide.’ Husband only cares about physical pleasure Karuna criticised her husband’s lack of empathy, writing that he only cared about physical pleasure and could not ensure her happiness. ‘A man who keeps in touch with other girls cannot make his wife happy, no matter who he is,’ she wrote. Brother speaks on dowry and harassment Her brother Kuldeep said the family worked in farming and selling momos. He described how her in-laws repeatedly abused her and rejected her as a daughter-in-law. He said, She had come to her maternal home on November 14, saying her husband and mother-in-law together beat her, and she would not go back. We thought staying here for a few days would improve the situation, but it did not. Police investigation Hanumana police station in-charge Anil Kakade said, ‘It is a case of suicide. The suicide note is also being investigated. Currently, the reason is not clear.’ SDOP Mauganj Shachi Pathak is conducting the investigation, and legal action will follow after the inquiry is completed.
