India defeated Sri Lanka by seven wickets in the 2nd T20I at the Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium, Visakhapatnam, on 23 December. With this victory, India gained a 2-0 lead in the five-match series. India had won the 1st T20I by eight wickets. Chasing 129 to win, India got past the finish line in 11.5 overs. Shafali Verma and Jemimah Rodrigues stitched a 58-run partnership after Smriti Mandhana’s early wicket (14). India’s 3rd T20I against Sri Lanka will be played in Thiruvananthapuram on 26 December. And the decision proved to be right as India restricted Sri Lanka to 128/9. For India, Sree Charani (2/23) and Vaishnavi Sharma (2/32) were the best bowlers. Vaishnavi, who made her international debut in the 1st T20I, took her maiden wicket when she dismissed Nilashika Silva for 2 runs. Harshitha Samarawickrama top-scored for Sri Lanka with 33 runs. Deepti Sharma, who recently became the no. 1 ranked T20I bowler, missed the match due to a mild fever. In her place, Sneh Rana was included. Rana had an impressive outing, registering figures of 1/11 in her four overs. Sri Lanka had yet another disappointing performance with the bat. Inserted to bat first, the visitors could not gain any major momentum in the innings. After Samarawickrama (33), captain Chamari Athapaththu (31) was the next best batter. And just like in the first match, Sri Lanka had three run outs in their innings. The aggressive right-hander scored her 12th T20I fifty and was unbeaten on 69 off just 34 balls, hitting 11 fours and one six. Verma, just last month, had won the Player of the Match award after scoring 87 runs off 78 balls in the Women’s World Cup final against South Africa. Jemimah, who was appointed captain of the Delhi Capitals in WPL, scored 26 runs off 15 balls.
