India’s Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill has received full fitness clearance and is now available for selection in all formats. He completed his rehabilitation program at the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE), marking an important step in his return to competitive cricket. Medical officials confirmed that Gill successfully finished his rehab and met every fitness and performance standard required. His recovery was closely monitored throughout the process, and officials described the results as “successful and satisfactory.” With rehabilitation complete, Gill will now be officially discharged from the CoE. A detailed clinical handover will be shared with the Sports Science Medicine (SSM) team, who will guide him through training and match preparation as he returns to regular cricket duties. Shubman Gill cleared to play T20I series against South Africa According to India Today’s report, T20I vice-captain Shubman Gill had already been chosen for India’s five-match T20I series against South Africa starting December 9. However, his inclusion depended on fitness approval from the CoE, which he has now received. This clearance ensures that he will feature in the series without any restrictions. Details of Gill’s injury and recovery Gill’s injury occurred during the first Test against South Africa at Eden Gardens, where he hurt his neck while attempting a sweep shot. He was taken to a hospital in Kolkata and discharged the next day but continued to experience discomfort. As a result, he missed the remaining Test match and the entire ODI series. During his rehab at the CoE, Gill underwent progressive batting drills and ground-conditioning exercises. To complete his recovery, he also played his final Return to Play (RTP) clearance match on December 5, 2025, which confirmed his readiness for the upcoming T20Is. India’s Struggle Without Gill in Test India struggled in the Test series without their captain and opening batter. The team was whitewashed 2-0 by South Africa, losing both matches played in Kolkata and Guwahati. His absence at the top of the order was keenly felt as India struggled to build strong starts. Gill to Open With Abhishek Sharma in Cuttack With his fitness clearance confirmed, Gill will now reunite with the squad for the T20I series. He is set to open the innings alongside Abhishek Sharma when the series begins on December 9 at Barabati Stadium in Cuttack.
