The Goharganj minor rape case survivor had to undergo a life-saving colostomy surgery at AIIMS after suffering severe injuries on the night of 21 November. Doctors said the procedure was essential to stop heavy bleeding and prevent infection, but it will force her to live with major difficulties for many months. Her recovery will involve physical treatment, emotional healing, and another major surgery in the coming weeks. Severe injuries and delay in treatment The child was brought to AIIMS with serious injuries on 22 November. Doctors found deep wounds on her knees, hands, and waist. The biggest concern was excessive bleeding, made worse by the delay in bringing her to the hospital. Doctors said that if she had been brought three hours earlier, the major surgery might have been avoided. What is a colostomy? A colostomy is a major surgery that changes the body’s normal process of passing stool. In this procedure, doctors cut a part of the large intestine and bring it out through an opening in the abdomen. This opening is called a stoma. Stool then passes into a special medical bag attached to the abdomen, instead of through the natural route. Why the surgery was needed Doctors said that the child’s private parts and rectum were severely damaged. These organs could not function normally and needed time to heal. If the natural route of passing stool had been kept, there was a high risk of infection and the wounds would not have healed. A temporary and safe alternative path was needed, so the doctors performed the colostomy. Surgery performed on 22 November Doctors carried out one major and one minor surgery. The major procedure was the colostomy. This surgery saved her life but has changed her daily routine completely. It is a temporary arrangement but comes with many challenges for the family. Current condition in ICU The child is under close observation in the ICU. She is now able to communicate, but her recovery journey has only begun. Doctors at AIIMS say she may face several difficulties in the coming months. Main Challenges After Surgery 1. Risk of infection The stoma is an open area and must be cleaned with great care. Even small negligence can cause a serious infection. For this reason, she has not been discharged yet. 2. Skin irritation The skin around the stoma becomes extremely sensitive. Redness, itching, or peeling may occur because of the adhesive used for the colostomy bag. 3. Managing the stoma bag The bag needs regular cleaning and replacement. Leakage is a constant concern and can cause infection as well as emotional distress. 4. Pain and discomfort Pain or tightness around the abdomen is common after this surgery. These symptoms are especially difficult for a young child to tolerate. Another major surgery ahead The colostomy is temporary. Doctors plan to perform another major operation after about one month, called permanent repair of the rectum. In this procedure, the stoma will be closed and the intestine will be reconnected to its natural position. This surgery will also be complex, and recovery afterwards will take time. Can the child live a normal life later? Doctors say she can return to a normal life, but only after a long healing period.Full recovery may take six months to one year. She will need strict medical care, regular hospital visits, and medication during this time. The physical wounds may heal, but the scar from the surgery will remain for life. The emotional impact will be even deeper. To recover from the trauma, she will need continuous psychological support and strong family care.
