England, trailing 0-1 in The Ashes series, appears to be facing a major setback. Team’s fast bowler Mark Wood is unlikely to play in the Gabba Test starting December 4. Fox Sports reported that Mark Wood is experiencing pain in his left knee. Due to this, Wood did not train on Saturday before the day-night Test. This is the same knee that kept Wood out of the entire England home season. He had surgery on it in March. England’s team management believes that Wood will not be fit for the Test starting Thursday in Brisbane; however, there is still hope for his participation in the later matches of the series. Why is Wood’s fitness so important for England? Wood’s fitness is crucial for England’s Ashes hopes. Because, in the current situation, their team is trailing. England had to face an 8-wicket defeat in the Perth Test. They couldn’t take any wickets in that match. Wood’s presence is necessary for making a comeback. His return in the Headingley Test during the 2023 Ashes completely changed England’s game. Wood knew it would be difficult to play all five Tests on this tour, but England would feel the need for him and Jofra Archer in every match. Either Tongue or Pottis will get a chance In his absence, England may give a chance to either Josh Tongue or Matthew Potts in the second Test. Both played against the Prime Minister’s XI this week. On Saturday, Potts dismissed Nathan McSweeney and Oliver Peak, both of whom had scored half-centuries. Tongue played a Test at Lord’s during the 2023 Ashes, where he dismissed Usman Khawaja, David Warner and Steve Smith. Additionally, England can also choose a main spinner instead of Wood if they want. They can choose between Shoaib Bashir or Will Jacks. However, neither is currently playing in Canberra.
