‘ro-ko-can-surely-play-odi-world-cup-in-2027’:morne-morkel-backs-rohit-virat-ahead-of-odi-series-in-ranchi;-says,-‘had-sleepless-nights-bowling-them’

India’s bowling coach Morne Morkel believes Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli still have plenty to offer in international cricket and can compete in the 2027 ODI World Cup if they remain mentally and physically prepared. Speaking ahead of the first ODI against South Africa, where both senior players will return to action, Morkel praised their experience and commitment to the game. Morne Morkel back RO-KO to play in ODI World Cup 2027 Morkel explained that the next World Cup is still far away, but the two senior batters have the quality to continue if they choose to put in the hard work. “It’s still a long way away… They’re quality players. As long as they’re happy to put the hard work in and the fitness, sure,” he said. Introducing his thoughts, Morkel said: “can for sure play the 2027 World Cup if they mentally and physically feel that their bodies can do that. They’ve won trophies, they know how to play big tournaments.” He was responding to a question on whether he would like to see Rohit and Kohli feature in the next World Cup. ‘Had sleepless nights bowling to them’ – Morne Morkel The former South African fast bowler, who joined India’s support staff last August, added that experience is something teams cannot replace easily. “I’ve always believed in experience and to have that experience, you don’t find that anywhere. They’ve won trophies, they know how to play big tournaments. So for sure, the World Cup, by all means.” Reflecting on his own cricketing days, Morkel said he understands the challenge of bowling to Rohit and Kohli. “I’ve played many games against them. I’ve had sleepless nights bowling to them… So for me, definitely on board with that (with Kohli and Rohit playing the World Cup).” Injuries to Gill and Iyer leave India without senior players India will play the ODI series without regular captain Shubman Gill, who injured his neck during the first Test in Kolkata. He was taken to the hospital and although he has shown improvement, he has been ruled out of both the second Test and the ODI series. KL Rahul will lead the side in his absence. Vice-captain Shreyas Iyer is also unavailable after suffering a spleen injury while taking a catch during the Australia series. He was hospitalised in Sydney and has started his recovery process. Morkel gave a positive update on both players, saying: “I spoke to Shubman two days ago just to check in with him and he’s recovering well… Shreyas has also started his rehab, which is great. So yeah, we’re looking forward to welcoming them back into the squad.”
