Team India’s ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer has fully recovered from the rib injury he suffered during India’s recent tour of Australia, the much-anticipated comeback series for Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. The injury had forced Iyer to be hospitalised in the ICU at Australia. After undergoing proper treatment and rehabilitation, the Indian middle-order batter is now fit and ready to return to the field. Sharing an update on social media, Iyer posted a picture on Instagram with the caption, ‘The Sun’s been great therapy,’ hinting at his positive mindset and steady recovery. With his fitness back on track, Shreyas Iyer is now eyeing a strong comeback in the upcoming ODI series against South Africa, which will be played in India. His return will be a big boost for Team India’s middle order as the team prepares for another busy cricketing season. Iyer shares recovery update after critical injury Team India batter Shreyas Iyer has given fans a much-needed sigh of relief with his latest Instagram post, marking his first public appearance since suffering a serious spleen injury during India’s tour of Australia last month. The cricketer shared a photo from a beach vacation on Monday, November 10, looking relaxed and cheerful. In his post, Iyer thanked his supporters for their care and concern during his difficult recovery period. He captioned his story, ‘’Sun’s been a great therapy. Grateful to be back. Thanks for all the love and care.’’ Dressed in a blue bucket hat and reflective sunglasses, the Indian vice-captain appeared to be in good spirits, signalling encouraging progress after what was described as a life-threatening injury. How did the incident happen in Sydney? Iyer sustained the injury during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney on October 26, 2025. While attempting a diving catch to dismiss Alex Carey, he landed awkwardly on his abdomen. What was first suspected to be a rib injury was later confirmed as a lacerated spleen, which caused internal bleeding. The seriousness of the injury required immediate medical intervention and hospitalisation in Sydney. According to a statement by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Iyer “sustained a blunt injury to his abdomen, resulting in a laceration of his spleen with internal bleeding.” The bleeding was promptly stopped through a minor medical procedure, followed by continuous monitoring and care. Medical care and the recovery process The treatment was jointly supervised by Sydney-based Dr. Kouroush Haghigi’s team and Indian specialist Dr Dinshaw Pardiwala, ensuring Iyer received top-class medical support. India’s captain Suryakumar Yadav also kept fans and teammates updated about Iyer’s condition, confirming that he was “doing well” and in good spirits during recovery. While the batter is reportedly on the path to full fitness, medical experts have advised a three-month rest period before returning to the field. Due to this, Iyer has been ruled out of the upcoming two-match Test series against South Africa, starting November 14 in Kolkata.
