At 4 AM on Sunday, doctors at AIIMS Bhopal performed a rare life-saving operation in three operation theaters at the same time. A 37-year-old brain-dead patient’s heart and kidneys were removed and transplanted to save three other patients. This is the second time AIIMS Bhopal has used organs from a brain-dead patient to save multiple lives. Doctors prepared for the operation all night, and the procedure began exactly at 4 AM. The patient’s heart was transplanted into a 40-year-old woman, while two kidneys were given to different patients. One kidney went to AIIMS Bhopal and the other to a private hospital. A 37-year-old man was admitted to AIIMS Bhopal a few days ago with a head injury. During treatment, his brain response completely ceased. Upon receiving the family’s consent, doctors first ruled out all reversible causes such as medication, shock, and hypothermia. Subsequently, a team of four doctors conducted examinations twice at an interval of six hours. The team checked for pupillary, corneal, gag, cough, oculocephalic, oculovestibular, and respiratory (apnea) reflexes. All reflexes were found to be absent, and the apnea test came back positive. According to AIIMS administration, the process of heart retrieval started first in the morning. After that, preparations for kidney transplant were made. However, the patient’s liver and lungs could not be used because Madhya Pradesh currently does not have lung transplant facilities, and the liver was found unsuitable due to the patient’s alcohol consumption. Kidney transplants are gaining momentum in Bhopal’s two major government hospitals, AIIMS and Hamidia. On one hand, 11 kidney transplants were performed at AIIMS, out of which 3 were cadaveric organ (i.e., kidney received from a brain-dead patient) transplants. Dr. Kavita Kumar, Convener of the Madhya Pradesh State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (SOTTO), said that Madhya Pradesh is currently in its initial stages regarding organ donation, like a small child learning to walk. There is still a lot of work to be done in this area. The most important thing is that there should be more discussion on organ donation and correct information should reach the people. When people talk about it, awareness will increase. They will understand its benefits. Once people know how many lives can be saved through organ donation, the graph of organ donation in the state will increase rapidly. He further added, it is necessary to start organ donation from brain-dead patients in government hospitals. This requires separate manpower, adequate space, and a large setup. Gandhi Medical College has manpower and space, but the necessary machines and testing facilities for organ retrieval still need to be developed. The good thing is that the government is very active in this direction. We are confident that soon the situation of organ donation in the state will improve and its graph will go up.
