On the auspicious occasion of Shani Pradosh, coinciding with Dhanteras, a grand Maha Puja was performed at the sacred Shri Mahakaleshwar Temple in Ujjain on Saturday.
The celebration marked the beginning of Dhanteras festivities from the courtyard of Lord Mahakal himself, invoking blessings for peace, prosperity, and well-being. Priests offer silver coins and perform special rituals The temple’s priest family conducted elaborate rituals, including the worship of Lord Mahakal, Lord Kuber, and silver coins — symbolizing wealth and prosperity. The coins were offered to the deity during the ritual. From early morning, large crowds of devotees thronged the temple premises to seek blessings. The rituals commenced at 10 am in Nandi Hall, with the priests performing Ganesh Puja, Mahalaxmi Puja, Panchamrit Snan, and Rudrabhishek. The one-hour-long ceremony was attended by senior officials, including Commissioner Ashish Singh, Collector Roshan Kumar Singh, and SP Pradeep Kumar. After the Puja, oil lamps were lit at the sanctum threshold, and devotees received Mahakal’s blessings. Upcoming festivities: Diwali and Annakoot According to the temple administration, Diwali and Annakoot will be celebrated on October 20. In the morning, women from the priest family will apply ubtan (herbal paste) to Lord Mahakal. Later, a grand 56 Bhog Annakoot offering will take place inside the sanctum. In the evening, thousands of oil lamps will illuminate the Kotitirth Kund during the Maha Aarti. The Govardhan Puja festival will follow on October 22. Kuber Dev worshipped with fragrant offering Meanwhile, at the Kundeshwar Mahadev Temple within the Sandipani Ashram complex, a special ritual was performed for Lord Kuber — one of the 84 Mahadev temples of Ujjain. The ancient idol of Kuber was adorned with ornaments and worshipped with devotion. The temple priest Shivansh Vyas explained that this ritual is performed only once a year on Dhan Trayodashi. Fragrance applied to Kuber’s Navel As per ancient tradition, devotees applied perfume (itr) to the navel of Lord Kuber’s idol, believed to attract wealth and prosperity. Offerings of sweets and pomegranates were also made. The Shri Yantra installed atop the temple spire remained a major attraction for devotees. Auspicious timings for Dhanteras shopping Astrologer Pandit Amar Dabbawala stated that this year’s Dhanteras falls under Brahma Yoga along with the Shani Pradosh conjunction, making it especially auspicious.
