The second and final Test match of the ongoing two-match series between India and the West Indies is set to begin at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi from October 10 to 14. After a commanding victory in the first Test at Ahmedabad by an innings and 140 runs, India will look to continue their dominance and seal the series 2-0. The hosts will aim to maintain their red-ball momentum and deliver another strong performance in front of the home crowd. India’s last Test appearance at this venue was in February 2023 against Australia, which they won convincingly within three days. Given their recent form and the home advantage, the Shubman Gill-led side will be confident of another comprehensive result. The West Indies, on the other hand, will look to put up a stronger fight and end their series on a positive note. The West Indies have played seven Test matches at this ground over the past 77 years, with mixed results. They have won two Tests, drawn four, and lost only once to India. This historical balance will give the visitors some confidence as they look to challenge India’s dominance. India’s strong record at the Arun Jaitley Stadium Team India has played 35 Test matches at this venue, securing 14 wins, suffering 6 defeats, and drawing 15 encounters. These numbers reflect the team’s consistent success in Delhi, especially in recent years. The pitch at this stadium generally helps batters early on, before gradually turning into a spin-friendly surface, a pattern that has often worked in India’s favour. The highest total recorded by India at this ground is an impressive 613/7 (declared) against Australia in 2008, while their lowest is 75 all out against the West Indies in 1987. India’s biggest victory by an innings came against Pakistan in 1952, when they won by an innings and 70 runs. Their largest win by runs was a 337-run triumph over South Africa in 2015. The narrowest win by wickets was a four-wicket success against Zimbabwe in 2002. Fresh centre pitch prepared for IND vs WI Delhi Test For this Test, a fresh centre strip has been prepared specifically to encourage even bounce and good carry. A BCCI source told PTI, “The centre strip has been prepared for the Test. This is a different track from the one on which Smriti Mandhana scored a 50-ball hundred.” The official added that the curators have focused on providing a fair contest between bat and ball while avoiding excessive early assistance for spinners. Local curator Ankit Datta is leading the pitch preparation under the supervision of senior BCCI curators Taposh Chatterjee and Ashish Bhowmick. The surface is expected to play true for the first two days, before gradually wearing down to offer a slow turn from Day Three onwards. The same source mentioned, “If West Indies bat better, then the match won’t end inside three days. The pitch will only offer turn from Day Three, and that too slowish in nature.” From Sachin Tendulkar to Virat Kohli: Top performers in Delhi When it comes to individual brilliance, several Indian greats have left their mark at this venue. Sachin Tendulkar tops the run charts at the Arun Jaitley Stadium with 759 runs in 10 matches, followed closely by modern-day legend Virat Kohli, whose memorable 243-run knock against Sri Lanka in 2017 remains the highest individual score at the ground. Former Indian batter Dilip Vengsarkar has scored the most centuries (4) here, while Sachin Tendulkar and VVS Laxman share the record for the most half-centuries (4 each). Interestingly, Hemu Adhikari holds the highest batting average at the ground, 182.50, with 365 runs from just six innings. On the bowling front, Anil Kumble remains unmatched at the Kotla. The legendary leg-spinner has taken 58 wickets in seven matches, including the iconic 10/74 against Pakistan in 1999, making him only the second bowler in history to take all ten wickets in a single innings. His overall 14/149 in that match remains the best bowling performance at the venue. Kumble also holds the records for most five-wicket hauls (4) and most ten-wicket hauls (2) here.
