Fugitive diamond merchant Nirav Modi, accused of fraud against Punjab National Bank (PNB), has claimed that if he is sent to India, investigative agencies will torture him during interrogation. Due to this, he has requested a re-hearing of his extradition case in London’s Westminster Court, which may take place on November 23, 2025. However, an official associated with the case said, “We have filed a chargesheet in this matter. There is no need to interrogate him at this time. Our investigation is almost complete. He only has to face trial. If the UK court asks, we can reassure them again that he will not be interrogated upon being brought to India. We have given such assurances before as well.” Nirav is accused of embezzling ₹6,498 crore from PNB: Nirav is accused of fraudulently embezzling more than ₹6,498 crore from Punjab National Bank. Nirav has also misused hundreds of Letters of Undertaking. All investigative agencies agree that there is no need to interrogate him. Nirav was arrested in March 2019. He is currently imprisoned in an UK jail, and the proceedings to bring him to India are still pending. India Says – No New Charges Will Be Filed India has informed the UK that Nirav will be housed in Barrack No. 12 of Mumbai’s Arthur Road Jail, where there is no risk of violence, overcrowding, or mistreatment, and medical facilities are available. Agencies have assured the UK that no new charges will be filed against Nirav. Nirav Has Been in London Jail for 6 Years Modi, 54, was arrested on March 19, 2019, on an extradition warrant. The then-UK Home Secretary Priti Patel ordered his extradition in April 2021. He has been in a London jail for nearly six years. Which Criminal Proceedings Are Underway Against Modi? The CBI is investigating the PNB fraud case. The ED is handling the money laundering case from the proceeds of that fraud, and a third case is underway in the CBI case for tampering with evidences and witnesses. The fugitive has exhausted all his legal avenues up to the Supreme Court and has applied for bail several times. However, all were rejected due to the risk of flight.
