A truck collided with two motorcycles, killing a couple, their two children, and another biker on the Gwalior-Itawa National Highway-719 near Tehda’s culvert in Bhind. A shocking video of the incident surfaced two days later after the incident on Tuesday morning, showing the sequence that led to the catastrophe.
An accident claimed the lives of five people, including an entire family. Accident captured on video The 17-second video clearly shows the chain of events. One motorcycle overtakes a slow-moving truck, only to be struck by a speeding mini-truck overtaking the same truck. The mini-truck first hit the motorcycle carrying the couple and then struck another biker coming from the opposite side. Within moments, five lives were lost. Authorities confirmed that the accident occurred at around 11 a.m. near the Tehda culvert in the Fup area on the Gwalior-Itawa National Highway. The video, widely circulated on social media, shows the horrifying speed and precision with which the incident unfolded, leaving little time for anyone to react. Victims and their heartbreaking story The deceased include Sunil Baghel (35), his wife Papita (32), their children Anshu (15) and Chotu (5), and another biker, Bhola Khan, who was traveling to Uttar Pradesh to pick up his daughter. Arpit, the 10-year-old surviving son of Sunil Baghel, was left alone as the sole survivor of his family. Speaking about the tragedy, he said, “I wanted to sit in front on the bike, but my father refused. I got upset and stayed home. I am extremely unlucky.” The grief-stricken boy spent hours staring at the door, as if hoping his family would return home. The last rites of Sunil Baghel’s family were performed on Wednesday morning. Villagers from Sora and surrounding areas came to console the boy and the bereaved family. The scene at the Baghel household was filled with unimaginable grief, with neighbors and relatives struggling to comfort young Arpit, whose family was wiped out in a matter of seconds. Eyewitness account Sunil’s elder brother Mukesh, who was following the motorcycles on his own bike, described the horrific scene: “I was around 200 meters behind my younger brother’s bike when the accident happened. The first truck passed safely, but the speeding mini-truck came on the wrong side and struck my brother, his wife, and children. They fell into the ditch. The truck driver abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene. By the time we tried to help, everyone had already passed away.” He added that the force of the collision was so strong that Sunil’s leg was injured, his daughter suffered severe head trauma, and his son and daughter-in-law fell into the ditch. The crowd tried to rescue the victims, but despite their best efforts, the entire family could not be saved. Family’s festival plans turned tragic The Baghel family was traveling to attend Durga Ashtami celebrations at their uncle’s house in Fup town. The women had arrived earlier by train, while Sunil, Papita, and the children were riding a motorcycle. The family had been visiting various temples and participating in rituals over the past week, including in Shivpuri, Baghelipur Bahadurpur, and Ratanagar, before heading to Fup for the Durga Ashtami celebration. Highway safety concerns Sunil’s father expressed his anguish over the unsafe highway, saying, “This highway has become a death trap. Accidents happen here every day. My entire family has been swallowed by this road. We are poor, and no one listens to us.” The stretch where the accident occurred was supposed to be widened years ago. Saints and local leaders had undertaken a ten-day hunger strike demanding highway expansion, and even met Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari. However, despite assurances, the work has barely progressed. MP Sandhya Rai stated she will follow up with the Union Minister and the Chief Minister to expedite the expansion. Rising road accident toll in Bhind Road accidents in Bhind have been rising alarmingly. Between January and August 2025, 516 accidents were reported, resulting in 182 deaths and numerous injuries. In just ten months, three families have been completely wiped out: This incident underscores the urgent need for road safety measures and timely highway expansion in Madhya Pradesh. Families continue to pay a heavy price for the inaction, and authorities face increasing pressure to prevent further tragedies.
