A 19-year-old youth from Prayagraj allegedly died by suicide a day after his family was informed that police from Madhya Pradesh had visited their home in connection with a complaint accusing him of taking 35 tolas of gold jewellery and cash from his girlfriend. According to police, the complaint was filed by the family of a young woman from Khurai in Madhya Pradesh’s Sagar district, who alleged that the youth had persuaded their daughter to hand over the valuables. Friendship on social media turned into a relationship Police said the young woman from the Khurai Dehat police station area became friends with Anshuman Prasad Singh through social media nearly two years ago. Their friendship eventually developed into a romantic relationship. Anshuman later travelled from Prayagraj to Khurai to meet her. After he returned home, the woman’s family lodged a complaint alleging that he had taken away 35 tolas of gold jewellery and cash belonging to her. MP police visited Prayagraj for inquiry Following the complaint, police from Khurai reportedly travelled to Prayagraj to verify the allegations. Anshuman was not at home when the police reached his residence. Officers informed his family about the complaint, shared their contact number and asked them to tell him to get in touch with the police. The team then returned to Khurai. According to the family, Anshuman came home later that night and was informed about the police visit. Youth allegedly died by suicide the next day The following day, July 4, Anshuman allegedly died by suicide by hanging himself in his room. Police believe he may have taken the step fearing legal action, though the exact reason behind the suicide is under investigation. Family background Anshuman was a resident of Garha village in Koraon, Prayagraj. His father, Rajeshwari Singh, is a contractor and lives with the family in Kharkhauni, Naini. His elder brother, Avinash Singh, is studying medicine, while Anshuman had completed his intermediate education. Conflicting claims over police visit According to the report, a head constable and a constable from Khurai Dehat police station, accompanied by the woman’s brother-in-law, visited Anshuman’s residence on July 3. However, Khurai Dehat Station House Officer Santosh Singh Dangi denied sending any police team to Prayagraj. He said the police station had not received any application regarding Anshuman’s death. Meanwhile, Naini Police Station Inspector Brij Gautam confirmed that the two were in a relationship and said the matter is being investigated. Police are looking into all aspects of the case, including the circumstances surrounding the youth’s death and the allegations made by the woman’s family.
