A life-term convict in the 2008 Ahmedabad serial blast case, Mohammad Abrar Maniyar, reached Ujjain on Sunday under tight security to attend his daughter’s nikah ceremony. He is serving a life sentence in the case and was brought from Sabarmati Jail in Ahmedabad after being granted a three-day parole by the Gujarat High Court. The entire area around his residence was turned into a high-security zone, with heavy police deployment and strict restrictions on movement. Heavy police deployment from Gujarat and local forces According to officials, Maniyar was brought to Ujjain on Saturday night by a Gujarat Police team comprising two ACP-rank officers, two station house officers, and around 21 other personnel. At the local level, Mahakal police also took charge of security arrangements, barricading the entire area and ensuring strict surveillance. Police restricted the movement of outsiders near his residence, and the venue of the wedding ceremony was thoroughly checked before he was allowed to attend the rituals. Security personnel were deployed outside the house, on nearby roads, and even on rooftops to prevent any untoward incident. Wedding ceremony conducted under strict supervision Mahakal police station in-charge Gagan Badal said that the convict was brought to Ujjain by Gujarat Police as per court orders, and local police ensured security arrangements accordingly. After attending the wedding rituals of his daughter, he was escorted back to Sabarmati Jail early Monday morning around 6 am under tight security. The serial blasts killed 56 people and injured more than 200 others. During the investigation, the ATS arrested more than 50 accused from across the country. A total of 49 accused were convicted in the case, with 38 sentenced to death and 11 awarded life imprisonment. Among them were five accused from Ujjain district. Earlier instance of parole in similar case Earlier in June 2025, another convict in the Ahmedabad blast case, Mohammad Shafiq Ansari, was also brought to Ujjain on parole with court permission to attend his niece’s wedding. At that time too, heavy security arrangements were made in the Chimanganj police station area, with police deployed inside, outside, and even on rooftops of the house.
