Indigo has launched a new and cheaper fare, ‘Indigo Lite’, for passengers traveling with only a cabin bag, i.e., ‘hand luggage’. Its limit will be 7kg. The company has taken this step to reduce the initial prices of air tickets, so that passengers traveling without large luggage have to pay less. Indigo is India’s largest domestic airline company. Last month, Air India also introduced a basic economy fare for passengers who do not want free meals on the flight and wish to travel at a lower cost. Question 1: What is ‘IndiGo Lite’ and how does it benefit passengers? Answer: ‘IndiGo Lite’ is the company’s new entry-level economy class. It is designed for passengers who travel with less luggage. Under this, passengers will have to pay a lower base price than a regular ticket. Additionally, they will be allowed an auto-assigned seat (system-assigned seat) and a cabin bag of up to 7kg without any extra charge. Question 2: When and where will the new fare be applicable? Answer: This new IndiGo fare will be applicable on both domestic and international flights. Bookings for it started on the company’s website and mobile app from July 1, while travel under this fare will commence from July 15. Question 3: Why did IndiGo take this step? Answer: Airlines nowadays want to charge passengers only for the services they use. IndiGo’s Chief Strategy Officer Alok Singh stated, “This has been designed for customers who travel with less luggage and only want to pay for the services they need. This demonstrates our commitment to making travel more accessible and affordable.” Question 4: Are other airlines also offering such cheap options? Answer: Yes, due to increasing competition in the market, companies are continuously making such changes. Air India also introduced a basic economy fare last month, which did not include complimentary meals (free food). Additionally, a similar cabin-bag-only system is already available on Air India Express’s direct channels. Question 5: What is the big news regarding jet fuel (ATF) prices? Answer: The government has cut the prices of Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF), i.e., jet fuel, by ₹5 per liter for domestic airlines. After this reduction, the price of ATF in the country has come down to ₹110 per liter. Cheaper fuel will also help airlines control ticket prices.
