Two massive earthquakes hit the country of Venezuela. Because Venezuela has a lot of oil, there is a rising apprehension if this disaster has damaged the country’s oil infrastructure? Did the earthquake damage Venezuela’s oil infra? According to media reports, the oil infrastructures are safe, but the region as been hit by power cut. According to reports from the Reuters and Associated Press (AP) news agencies, the oil pipes, wells, or factories are safe. The biggest oil cities, like Maracaibo, were far away from where the ground shook the hardest. However, there are reports that the fatal earthquake caused huge power cuts in several areas across the country. If there is no electricity, then, oil machines won’t work properly. Venezuela may temporarily produce less oil until the power grid is fixed. Will this affect India’s oil imports? This may affect but only a little bit and for a short time. India might face short delays in getting oil from Venezuela. This is apparently because the power cuts will slow down how fast Venezuela can pump and load oil onto ships. However, since the oil fields and ports are not physically destroyed, India’s long-term oil supply from Venezuela is safe. How much oil does India buy from Venezuela? India buys about 4,20,000 barrels of oil every single day. Data from the energy tracking company Kpler shows that India has drastically increased its oil shopping from Venezuela recently. In April, India bought 2,83,000 barrels per day. In May, that number jumped to around 4,17,000 to 4,20,000 barrels per day. What is Venezuela’s share in India’s oil supply? Venezuela supplies about 8.5% of India’s total oil, making it India’s 3rd-largest supplier. According to a market report by Angel One, India imports a total of 4.9 million (49 lakh) barrels of oil per day from all over the world. Venezuela’s share of that total basket is roughly 8.5%. A report by the Hindustan Times notes that because of recent shipping troubles in the Middle East, India started buying much more oil from Venezuela. This huge jump made Venezuela the 3rd-largest oil supplier to India, right behind Russia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
