Members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) staged a protest at Polytechnic Square in Bhopal over the issue of women’s safety, demanding the removal of a liquor shop located near Maharani Laxmi Bai (MLB) Girls’ College. A large number of students gathered with banners and placards, raising slogans against the state government and calling for the liquor outlet to be shifted away from the educational institution. Placards carried messages such as, “No liquor shop near a temple of education,” and “Where the light of knowledge shines, liquor shops have no place.” Some protesters were also seen climbing police barricades as part of their demonstration. More than 200 police personnel, along with senior officials, a riot control vehicle, and water cannons, were stationed to maintain law and order. Collector assures transparent review Bhopal Collector Priyank Mishra thanked the students for expressing their concerns through peaceful and democratic means. He said he became aware of the controversy surrounding the liquor shop soon after assuming office. Based on representations from students and previously raised objections, a notice was issued on June 3 in accordance with the rules. According to the Collector, the concerned party subsequently approached the High Court, which directed the district-level committee to hear the matter and take a decision. He assured the students that authorities would verify compliance with all applicable norms, including the required distance between the liquor shop and the college, and that a decision would be taken soon through a transparent and lawful process.
