Four tourists have died after drowning in Rishikesh while bathing in the Ganga. The victims had arrived from different states for a holy dip. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) has recovered all four bodies and identified them. Three of the bodies were recovered from the Pashulok Barrage channel. The deceased have been identified as a couple from Delhi — Manish Arya (30) and his wife Janki (28) — along with Shailendra Gurjar (30) from Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, and Shaurya Nagar (20) from Gautam Buddha Nagar, Uttar Pradesh. According to officials, the Delhi-based couple was swept away on Sunday (June 14) while bathing at a ghat in the Chandreshwar Nagar area. Janki’s body was recovered on Tuesday (June 16), while Manish Arya’s body was found on Friday (June 19), both of which have now been identified. The bodies of the two young men from Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh were also recovered on Friday from the barrage channel. On June 14, while bathing at Chandreshwar Ghat, the couple was caught in a strong current and deep waters of the Ganga and were swept away. Gwalior youth swept away while rescuing relative at Phoolchatti – 30-year-old Shailendra Gurjar, a resident of Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, had come to Rishikesh with his family near Phoolchatti under Laxman Jhula police station area. On June 15, while bathing at a restricted stretch of the Ganga, his family member Renu Gurjar (33) began drowning in the strong current. Shailendra jumped into the river to rescue her. Renu was safely saved, but Shailendra was caught in the current and went missing. Renu was later admitted to AIIMS Rishikesh, where treatment is underway. Shailendra was due to get married in two months. UP youth drowns at Sai Ghat – In another incident, 20-year-old Shaurya Nagar, a resident of Bisrakh Jalalpur in Gautam Buddha Nagar, Uttar Pradesh, had come to Rishikesh with seven friends. While bathing at Sai Ghat in the Muni Ki Reti area, he attempted to swim in the Ganga but was swept away by the strong current and drowned. SDRF recovers bodies after search operation – Following the incidents, SDRF deep divers launched a continuous search operation using modern equipment. On June 16, the body of Janaki was recovered from the barrage channel. Later, on June 19, three more bodies were recovered from the Pashulok Barrage channel with the help of machinery and retrieved by the rescue team. Identification of the deceased – After identification by family members, the deceased were confirmed as: Manish Arya (30), resident of Uttam Nagar, Delhi; Janaki (28), his wife; Shailendra Gurjar (30), resident of Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh; and Shaurya Nagar (20), resident of Gautam Buddha Nagar, Uttar Pradesh. After completion of formalities, SDRF handed over the bodies to police, who conducted panchnama and sent them for post-mortem.
