The central government has approved the use of 100% pure ethanol as fuel in the country. Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari provided this information during a press conference in Nagpur on Saturday, June 13. He stated that he has signed the file finalizing the rules and regulations related to this decision. The main objective of this step is to reduce the country’s dependence on crude oil (a fossil fuel) imports and prevent pollution from the transport sector. Ethanol-powered cars to hit the market in the next 6 weeks The Union Minister stated that the country’s automobile sector has accepted this change, and several major companies are fully prepared to launch 100% ethanol-powered vehicles to market. According to Gadkari, Toyota, Suzuki, MG, and Hyundai, among other companies, are going to launch their new models that will run entirely on ethanol in the Indian market within the next 6 weeks. Much cheaper option compared to petrol; import bill will decrease Nitin Gadkari emphasized that ethanol can emerge as an economical and sustainable alternative to petrol. India currently fulfills a large part of its needs by importing crude oil from abroad, which puts a financial burden on the country’s treasury. With the advent of 100% ethanol, not only will the general public get relief from expensive petrol, but India’s huge fuel import bill will also be significantly reduced. What is Ethanol? Ethanol is a type of alcohol, which is produced by the fermentation of starch and sugar. It is used as an eco-friendly fuel in vehicles by mixing it with petrol. Ethanol is mainly produced from sugarcane juice, but ethanol can also be prepared from starch-containing materials like corn, rotten potatoes, cassava, and spoiled vegetables. E85 fuel was launched last week; government’s focus on biofuel To reduce carbon emissions from the transport sector, the government is continuously taking steps. In this series, last week the government introduced E85 fuel for flex-fuel vehicles. The price of E85 fuel in Delhi has been fixed at ₹82.12 per liter. This is a full ₹20 less than the regular E20 petrol being sold in Delhi. This fuel is a mixture in which up to 85% ethanol and 15% petrol are mixed. Now, with the approval of 100% ethanol, a new chapter has begun in the country’s green energy and biofuel sector. Currently, 4 types of flex-fuels are being sold in the market. Can only be used in these select vehicles E85 fuel cannot be used in regular petrol vehicles. For this, the vehicle’s engine must be specifically based on ‘flex-fuel’ technology.
