Surat has added a significant milestone to its sporting profile with the selection of young cricketer Gauri Goyal to the Indian Under-19 Women’s Cricket Team. Known for her strong all-round abilities, she has been chosen for the upcoming series against Sri Lanka. Her selection has sparked celebrations across Surat and Gujarat’s cricket fraternity, as she becomes the first woman cricketer from the city to earn a place directly in an Indian national cricket squad. Long-standing barrier broken for Surat cricket Surat District Cricket Association (SDCA) Secretary Naimesh Desai said, “Gauri Prakash Goyal impressed national selectors through consistent performances in domestic tournaments”. He described the achievement as a landmark moment for the city’s cricket history. For years, Surat’s cricketing talent was often seen as limited to the domestic circuit, with few players making it to the international stage. Gauri’s selection has now broken that long-standing perception and established Surat’s presence at the national level. Cricket officials believe her success could encourage and open opportunities for many more emerging players from South Gujarat to pursue higher honours in the sport. Consistent performances earned place at elite BCCI camp Gauri’s selection for the Indian Under-19 Women’s team follows a series of impressive performances at the domestic level. Her form earned her a place in the BCCI’s prestigious 26-day Centre of Excellence Under-19 Women’s Elite Camp. Only 78 of the country’s most promising young cricketers were shortlisted for the programme by the National Cricket Academy (NCA). Gauri was among six players selected from Gujarat, alongside Aksah Parmar, Charlie Solanki, Ayushi Patel, Jiya Jain and Siya Patel. Following the camp, the players were divided into six teams of 13 members each for a high-performance inter-camp tournament. She further strengthened her credentials with a series of notable displays, catching the attention of selectors and coaches alike. Left-arm spinner and dependable middle-order batter Gauri has built a reputation as a versatile all-rounder capable of contributing in both departments of the game. Her left-arm wrist spin, a rare skill in women’s cricket, has consistently troubled opposition batters, while her ability to anchor the innings or accelerate when required has made her a reliable middle-order batter. With modern teams placing increasing value on multi-dimensional players, Gauri’s combination of left-arm spin and batting versatility has emerged as one of her biggest strengths. Cricket observers believe it is this unique skill set that played a key role in securing her place in the India’s Under-19 squad. Busy season sees Gauri feature in 28 matches across formats The ongoing season has been one of the most demanding and productive of Gauri Goyal’s young career. She has featured in 28 BCCI-recognised matches across the Under-19, Under-23 and Senior Women’s categories, delivering consistent performances with both bat and ball. Gauri is the daughter of Surat-based textile businessman Prakash Goyal. Despite her packed cricket schedule, she has continued to focus on academics and is currently preparing for her Class 12 examinations through the open board system, reflecting her commitment both on and off the field. Sri Lanka series to be played in Chennai and Puducherry Following her selection for the national side, Gauri is set to represent India in the upcoming Under-19 Women’s bilateral series against Sri Lanka. The tour schedule includes three T20 matches in Chennai, followed by a three-match One-Day series in Puducherry. With her maiden India call-up secured, she has already intensified preparations and is spending long hours in the nets, aiming to make an impact with her left-arm spin against the Sri Lankan side. Sri Lanka series seen as key step towards 2027 World Cup The upcoming series against Sri Lanka is expected to play a crucial role in shaping India’s preparations for the next ICC Under-19 Women’s World Cup. Strong performances in the bilateral contest could significantly enhance a player’s chances of securing a place in the World Cup squad. The BCCI is expected to announce a list of around 25 probable players by the end of July. The final Indian squad for the ICC Under-19 Women’s World Cup, scheduled to be jointly hosted by Bangladesh and Nepal in January 2027, will be selected from this pool. At present, Gauri is regarded as one of the leading contenders for a place in the tournament squad. ‘I am grateful to my parents, coaches and God’ Speaking at a press conference held at Lalbhai Contractor Stadium, Gauri struck a humble yet confident note while reflecting on her achievement. She said, “I feel proud to represent Gujarat and now have the opportunity to represent India. First and foremost, I am grateful to God for giving me this platform. I would also like to thank my parents, coaches and support staff, who stood by me through every challenge and constantly encouraged me”. She added, “I consider myself fortunate to have received this opportunity, and I will give my best and contribute 100 per cent whenever I take the field for my country.” Following her selection, officials of the Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA), the Surat District Cricket Association (SDCA) and several members of the sporting community congratulated Gauri and wished her success in her international journey.
