Bangladesh Test team spinner Nayeem Hasan has accused the Chattogram police of assault and abuse. Nayeem claims that policemen grabbed him by the throat, put him in another auto-rickshaw, and then beat him at the station. The 26-year-old cricketer said, “I repeatedly told them who I was, but they refused to listen.” Nayeem arrived in Chattogram by flight on the night of June 12 after playing his last match for Prime Bank Cricket Club in the Dhaka Premier League. He was returning home by CNG auto at 11:25 PM when police stopped his vehicle under the Lalkan Bazar flyover and assaulted him. Nayeem has been selected for the Bangladeshi team for the lone Test against Zimbabwe. Nayeem said he was beaten and assaulted by police in station Deputy Commissioner: ‘Take appropriate action against culprits’ Reacting to the matter, Amirul Islam, Deputy Commissioner of Chattogram Metropolitan Police, said that the incident is being investigated. He told Bangladesh media, as per ESPN Cricinfo, “We can assure you that he (Nayeem) will get justice,” said Amirul. “We are investigating the matter, and whoever did it will be punished because we have zero tolerance in this regard, considering police have a protocol and they must maintain that because our image is involved with it.” BCB demands impartial investigation, appropriate actions against responsible The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has expressed concern over the incident. The board has called the matter extremely serious, demanding an impartial investigation and action against those responsible. In an official statement, BCB said, ‘The alleged behaviour towards Nayeem Hasan by some members of law-enforcement agencies is unacceptable and inappropriate.’ The Cricketers Welfare Association of Bangladesh has also demanded strict action against those involved in Nayeem’s alleged harassment. Meanwhile, 3 police members, including an SI of Khulshi Police Station, have been withdrawn. Nayeem’s family has also filed a case regarding the incident.
