Shreyas Iyer to replace Suryakumar Yadav as T20I skipper:Vaibhav Sooryavanshi may get maiden call-up; BCCI selection meeting begins

Team India’s squad for the upcoming tours of Ireland England and the Asian Games in Japan will be picked on Saturday. Notably, Shreyas Iyer is likely to be announced as India’s new T20I captain, taking over the baton from Suryakumar Yadav. BCCI’s selection committee panel, including chief selector Ajit Agarkar, new T20I captain Shreyas Iyer, RP Singh, Pragyan Ojha and other selectors put on their thinking caps at the BCCI HQ in Mumbai. The squad announcement is expected to take place shortly with Agarkar expected to announce the team via a press conference. Apart from the change of guard in captaincy, another major call could be the inclusion of 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who lit up the IPL 2026 season with his performances. Shreyas Iyer returns to T20Is as captain after 30-month gap Iyer last played a T20I way back in 2023 against Australia and was nowhere near India’s plans in the build-up to the T20 World Cup 2026. But after a good IPL season with the Punjab Kings, where he captained his team to a record start and scored 498 runs, it goes without saying that he deserved a spot in India’s playing XI. There have been growing uncertainty over Suryakumar’s place in India’s T20I team despite the T20 World Cup title win, owing to his poor form. SKY, as he is popularly known in cricketing circles, also did not have a good IPL where he scored 270 runs in 13 matches with two half-centuries. This season, he shattered a plethora of records. He hit the most number of sixes in a single IPL edition, hit the most runs by an uncapped batter and also registered the highest strike-rate. Sooryavanshi’s call-up could be on the cards after he was named both ‘Most Valuable Player’ and ‘Emerging Player’ in IPL 2026. Suryakumar Yadav India’s second-best T20I captain after Rohit Sharma Although Suryakumar has fallen out of favour with the selection committee, there’s no doubting his incredible achievements as India’s T20I captain. He has the second-best win percentage by an Indian captain in the shortest format after Rohit Sharma and better than the iconic MS Dhoni. Apart from winning the T20 World Cup 2026 earlier this year, Surya also had guided Team India to Asia Cup glory last year, a campaign where the Men in Blue beat Pakistan three times including the final, to clinch continental glory.
