Today in Madhya Pradesh Crime Files, the story is about the infamous Devendra Chaurasia murder case in Damoh, which caused a stir in the state’s politics. The case was related to the murder of a prominent leader, in which several influential names, including an MLA and a District Panchayat President, came to light. The sensation was also due to the fact that just three days before the murder, Devendra had met the Chief Minister and expressed a threat to his life. He was assured of security, but three days later, he was murdered. The allegations were made against the husband of a ruling party MLA. It was March 15, 2019. Around 10:30 in the morning. Work was about to begin as usual at the asphalt-crusher plant located on Patharia Road in Hata, Damoh district. The machines were quiet, laborers were slowly arriving, and plant owner Devendra Chaurasia was preparing to open the office with his family members. Vehicles suddenly entered the plant Devendra Chaurasia was standing outside the plant. His son Somesh and other family members were nearby. Just then, several vehicles entered through the main gate, one after another. A black Duster, a Creta, a Mahindra TUV, and a red open jeep… followed by several bikes. About 25 to 30 people got out of the vehicles. Some had sticks in their hands, some had iron rods. Some were carrying weapons like baseball bats. Attackers said – will not leave alive According to eyewitnesses, a young man pointed a revolver at Devendra’s temple. It was said – ‘You changed sides, you ended our dominance… today we will not leave you alive’ After this, the attack began. Iron rods sticks shovels and clubs started raining down. Devendra Chaurasia was continuously attacked. His family members ran to save him, but the attackers also threatened them. They said – ‘Whoever comes out, the same will happen to them…’ The entire crusher plant was echoing with screams. Son ran to save father then both fell down When son Somesh stepped forward to save his father, the attackers also pounced on him. He was also attacked with iron rods and sticks. In a matter of seconds, both father and son lay on the ground. The attackers fled the scene. What was left behind was a blood-stained plant and terrified family members. Devendra Chaurasia was still breathing. The family first took him to Hatta Hospital. Due to his critical condition, he was referred to Damoh and then sent to Jabalpur. Who was Devendra Chaurasia after all? Devendra Chaurasia was not just a businessman. He was considered a prominent face in Damoh’s politics. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, he had contested on a BSP ticket. Even after losing the election, he remained active in the politics of the area. He also had a large network in contracting and crusher businesses. Therefore, it was not clear whether the reason behind Devendra’s murder was political or related to his business. Met CM 3 days before the murder On March 12, 2019, Devendra Chaurasia joined Congress in Bhopal. At that time, Congress had a government in Madhya Pradesh and Kamal Nath was the Chief Minister. It is said that Devendra had expressed a threat to his life while joining Congress. He had also demanded security from the Chief Minister. But exactly three days later, he was murdered. From here, this case became not just a murder, but a political conspiracy. Suspicion on people connected to power After the murder, the police started an investigation. Statements were taken from the injured son Somesh, who was present at the time of the incident, and other family members. Several names came to light in the statements. Somesh told the police that the attackers came in cars and on bikes. He named several individuals including Govind Singh, Golu Singh, Chandu Singh, Indrapal Patel, Lokesh Patel, Amjad Pathan, and Shriram Sharma. Number of accused reached 28 Police initially registered an FIR against 7 people. However, as the investigation progressed, the number of accused increased to 28. A case was registered under several sections including murder, rioting, and assault. After the incident, the accused absconded and the police started searching for them. But many questions still remained Was it just an old grudge? Or a battle for politics and dominance? Who ultimately plotted the murder of Devendra Chaurasia? What was the real reason behind the attack? And who all were present at the plant that day?
