Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium is likely to host the inaugural fixture of the upcoming Big Bash League (BBL) 2026-27 season, as per multiple reports. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) were initially sceptical about the proposal, but they have given their green light to Cricket Australia. Final details still need to be jotted down before an official announcement can be made, but ANI reported that five officials from Cricket Australia attended the IPL fixture between Chennai Super Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad to conduct a venue inspection. Apart from the CA officials, BCCI supremo Mithun Manhas was also present at the Chepauk Stadium for Monday’s high-profile clash. BBL teams interested in playing on Indian shores The report claimed that several BBL teams have expressed interest in participating in the game. Among them, the Sydney Thunder, Melbourne Stars and Melbourne Renegades are reportedly willing to play in Chennai. The BBL’s upcoming season is likely to begin in December. Chennai’s weather could be a little problematic during that time of the year, so it will be interesting how things pan out eventually. Ashwin pulled out of BBL last year While the BCCI does not allow active Indian men’s players to appear in overseas T20 leagues, Ravichandran Ashwin, a former Chennai Super Kings player, was set to become the first Indian international to play in the Big Bash League 2025-26 season after signing with Sydney Thunder, but pulled out due to a knee injury. Why Australia’s T20 carnival is heading to India? For a very long time, BBL was seen as the second richest league in the world after the IPL. However, in recent years, Big Bash’s popularity has stagnated. Due to the rise of T20 leagues like SA20 and the ILT20, BBL is facing tough competition. Furthermore, Cricket Australia’s plans to privatise the Big Bash league were shelved after opposition from states like New South Wales and Queensland. India is the undisputed cricket market leader, and hosting the inaugural fixture in Chennai will help BBL lure more Indian audiences. Notably, a few final rounds of discussions at the government level are still pending before the match can be officially confirmed. Promotional matches have been held in India before This is not the first time that matches of a foreign league are being held in India. Indian grounds have hosted NBA, English Premier League, and La Liga matches. In 2019, America’s famous basketball league, the National Basketball Association (NBA), organised its official pre-season matches in India for the first time. Then, 2 matches were played between Sacramento Kings and Indiana Pacers in Mumbai. In 2018, Spanish league La Liga’s Girona FC and Australian A-League’s Melbourne City FC played a pre-season tournament with Indian club Kerala Blasters at Kochi’s Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.
