major-traffic-overhaul-in-indore:left-turns-at-17-key-junctions-to-be-widened;-private-govt-land-may-be-acquired

To ease traffic congestion in Indore, authorities will redesign 17 major intersections across the city. Obstacles at left turns will be removed and roads widened to improve traffic flow. If required, land will be acquired from private owners and public agencies for the project. The work will be carried out in phases, beginning with the Rasoma Square and MR-10 intersections. Engineering of these intersections to be improved

1. ‘Zero’ waiting time: Previously, vehicles wanting to turn left also had to wait for the signal to open because vehicles going straight ahead were stopped. With the left turn open, vehicles turning left can pass without stopping, which shortens the queue of vehicles at the signal. 2. Fuel and time saving: According to an estimate, making left turns free at busy intersections in Indore saves drivers an average of 2 to 5 minutes, and the absence of repeated clutch-brake usage reduces fuel consumption. 3. Reduction in accidents: At intersections, two-wheelers often collided while trying to ‘cut corners’. With organised left turns, vehicle movement is in the correct direction, and accidents have stopped.
