22-year-old woman hangs self after argument over wearing jeans:Family alleges dowry harassment and mental torture by husband and mother-in-law

A 22-year-old woman allegedly died by suicide in Indore district on Monday afternoon after being scolded by her mother-in-law for wearing jeans, police said. The incident took place in the Dwarkapuri area. The woman’s family has accused her husband and mother-in-law of harassment, mental torture, and taunting her over dowry demands. Found hanging inside room According to Dwarkapuri police, the deceased has been identified as Gauri (22), wife of Rahul.
Police said the incident came to light when the couple’s young daughter started crying inside the house on Monday afternoon. Rahul reportedly called out to Gauri several times but received no response from the room. When he entered the room, he allegedly found Gauri hanging from a noose. Dispute began after she wore jeans at in-laws’ house According to family members, Gauri had worn jeans for the first time at her in-laws’ house, which allegedly led to an argument with her mother-in-law, Sharda. Gauri’s sister Pooja said their cousin Kiran, who had been staying with Gauri for the past month, was also present at the house during the incident. According to Pooja, as soon as Gauri came out wearing jeans, her mother-in-law began scolding her. During the argument, Sharda also allegedly spoke harshly to Rahul. Family members said Gauri was deeply hurt after the confrontation and went into her room. At the time, Rahul was reportedly using his mobile phone, while the couple’s young daughter was playing in the hall. Family alleges dowry harassment Members of Gauri’s maternal family alleged that she had been facing harassment ever since her marriage.
According to them, Rahul and his mother frequently taunted her over dowry-related issues and created mental pressure on her. The family also claimed that Rahul had been unemployed for a long time, which often led to disputes at home. Family claims husband misrepresented job before marriage According to the woman’s family, Gauri’s in-laws run a small shop selling offerings, garlands, and flowers near a temple in the Gopur area. The family alleged that before the marriage, Rahul’s family had claimed that he worked in the medical field. However, after the wedding, they discovered that he was unemployed. They said this issue also became a frequent source of tension within the family. Gauri came from labourer family Gauri got married around one-and-a-half years ago. She had two elder sisters and a younger brother. Her parents work as labourers to support the family. Following her death, the family is in deep shock. Police begin investigation Dwarkapuri police said the body has been sent for postmortem examination and will be handed over to the family afterward. Statements from both the maternal and in-laws’ families are being recorded. Police said further legal action will be taken based on the investigation findings.
