On average, 43% of people in 31 countries around the world say that living without a car is impossible for them. In 22 countries, people consider cars as their preferred mode of transport. 65% of Americans cannot live without a car. However, the first choice of people in India is public transport. 62% of the country’s people prefer to choose public transport. This has been revealed in Ipsos’s Global Mobility Report 2026. However, countries like France, Germany, America and Canada, which have been the biggest advocates of EVs, are becoming disillusioned with them. In Japan, this figure has dropped to -28%. In contrast, Indonesia (60%), Mexico (60%) and Chile (57%) are at the forefront. This survey was conducted in 31 countries. 23,722 people participated. Self-Driving Cars – India is Not Afraid – EV appeal in India is 40%, which is slightly lower than the global average of 47%. However, it is in a better position than Europe and North America. – 36% of people consider self-driving cars unsafe. France (-37%), Netherlands (-35%), and America (-25%) are at the forefront. – About 47% of people in India feel secure with this technology, while the global average is 36%. Big opportunities for every company in the Indian market In India, 16% would prefer to buy a car from a tech company, 22% prefer traditional automakers. – 62% have no preference. This means the market is not closed to anyone. Doors are open for tech companies like Google and Xiaomi as well as Tata and Mahindra. Anti-China sentiment growing in Asia, big opportunities for India – 90% of people in Japan will not buy Chinese cars. Anti-China sentiment is also strong in South Korea. – 48% of people in Canada will not buy American cars. This means there are big opportunities for India in this environment. – This distrust against China could open doors for Indian brands in Asian markets. – 42% of people are avoiding buying cars from some specific country. Chinese is at the top of this list. Its boycott rate is (41%) and for American cars this figure is around 24%.
