Gujarat Titans (GT) handed the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) their third defeat in IPL 2026, at the Narendra Modi Stadium on 30 April. With this, GT made it 1-1 against RCB in the group stage after having lost to the defending champions at Chinnaswamy earlier. RCB on the other hand, suffered their third defeat of the season. But despite that, the Rajat Patidar-led side remains well on track to qualify for the playoffs. One of the biggest talking points of the match was Jason Holder’s catch, which stirred controversy with many believing that it was wrong on the part of the umpire to give it out. Out or not out? Cricket fraternity divided over Jason Holder’s catch Holder’s catch to dismiss Rajat Patidar sparked a lot of debate on social media. This happened in the eighth over of RCB’s innings when Rajat Patidar attempted a pull shot but could not clear the field. Jason Holder ran and completed a good catch and after landing on the ground, replays suggested that a part of the ball might have touched the ground. Virat Kohli and RCB head coach Andy Flower were involved in discussions with the umpire. Cricketer-turned-commentators Irfan Pathan and Aakash Chopra felt that Patidar should have been adjudged not out. Taking to social media, they expressed their opinion. Irfan shared a post on X, writing ‘Not out!’ alluding to the Patidar dismissal. Chopra, on the other hand, shared a video where he explained why he felt that it should not have been out. Mohammad Kaif also explained why he felt that the batter, Patidar in this case, was unlucky to have been given out by the umpire. Kaif stated that the ball had touched the ground after being caught by Holder. However, Ravi Ashwin was of a different opinion. While speaking on his YouTube show, the ex-cricketer said that the ball might not have necessarily hit the floor as was seen in the replays. Instead, he reckoned that Holder probably wrapped the ball in his hands. What does the rule say? While opinions on the catch are divided, what does the rule say? According to the rules, a catch is fair if the fielder has total control over it. According to Law 33.2.2.1 of MCC Laws of Cricket, a catch will be a fair one if the ball is in the hands of the fielder, even if the hand holding the ball is touching the ground. However, the ball should not touch the ground. The umpire ruled it out because, after watching the replays, he did not have enough evidence to conclude that the ball had touched the ground. Shubman Gill’s post featuring Virat Kohli One of the highlights of the GT vs RCB match saw Kohli aggressively celebrate by throwing the ball onto the ground after taking Shubman Gill’s catch in the second innings. Kohli was pumped up, alright after Gill’s fiery 43-run knock came to an end. Kohli was also caught teasing Gill, who was seated in the dugout, towards the closing stages of the match. And after the match, the two also engaged in a warm embrace. Taking to Instagram, the GT captain shared some snaps from the match and one of which featured a picture of Kohli staring him down in the second innings. Gill also appeared to take a dig at RCB, with his caption, lauding Player of the Match Jason Holder. “Play Hold @jaseholder98 Bold performance by the team tonight,” he wrote on Instagram. GT vs RCB memes RCB will next be in action against the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on 7 May in Lucknow. Gujarat Titans (GT) on the other hand, would host the Punjab Kings (PBKS) at the Narendra Modi Stadium on 3 May.
