In today’s Madhya Pradesh Crime Files Part-1, you will learn about the case from Ujjain which rocked the state. What initially appeared to be a road accident was later uncovered as a carefully planned contract killing. The victim, a 30-year-old woman named Swati, was allegedly murdered in broad daylight on a busy road, with the crime unfolding in front of police personnel. November 15, 2019: The afternoon that turned into a crime scene Around 3 PM, traffic on Ujjain’s Chintaman Ring Road was moving as usual. Shops were busy, and people were going about their day, unaware that within seconds, the road would turn into a crime scene. An auto-rickshaw stopped near the toll area, and a tall woman in her early 30s stepped out. She appeared slightly anxious, holding her purse, as if in a hurry. She had barely walked a few steps when a white Tata Magic vehicle approached from behind, honking loudly. ASI chased the vehicle, but it escaped After the collision, chaos broke out on the road. Bystanders rushed to help as a crowd gathered. Assistant Sub-Inspector Sanjay Yadav, who was nearby in a surveillance vehicle, witnessed the incident. He immediately started his vehicle and chased the suspect vehicle. However, the driver fled in the wrong direction and disappeared within seconds. Despite chasing it for nearly 200–300 meters, the vehicle could not be caught. “This is Swati!”: Shock among bystanders Meanwhile, the injured woman lay critically wounded on the road. As people gathered, a man rushed forward, recognized her, and exclaimed, “This is Swati!” The crowd turned their attention toward him in shock. Race to hospital ends in tragedy Swati was still breathing but in critical condition. With the help of locals, she was rushed to CHL Apollo Hospital. However, she succumbed to her injuries, and doctors declared her dead. Initially, the case was treated as a routine road accident. The body was sent for postmortem, and police began searching for the vehicle as a procedural step—unaware that the case would soon take a dramatic turn. ASI’s statement changes the course of investigation The case took a crucial turn after ASI Sanjay Yadav’s statement. He revealed that the woman was talking on her phone when the Tata Magic deliberately hit her. The vehicle even veered off the road to target her directly. This testimony shifted the investigation from an accident to a suspected murder. From Sarfaraz to Wahid: The breakthrough On November 20, police reached the residence of Sarfaraz, the registered owner of the vehicle. They learned that the vehicle was being driven by a man named Wahid Khan. When police tracked Wahid, he attempted to flee but was apprehended. Initially evasive, he eventually confessed under interrogation. Not an accident, but a contract killing Wahid admitted that he intentionally ran over Swati. He claimed he had no personal enmity with her and had been paid ₹1 lakh to carry out the murder. The revelation confirmed that the incident was not an accident but a premeditated contract killing carried out in public. Find out more in Part 2 of this crime series.
