India and the United States concluded another negotiating round on the much-talked-about trade deal with India. The discussions took place in Washington DC from 20 April to 23 April, 2026. The Indian delegation had travelled there to meet US officials and push the proposed Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA.) According to the Ministry of Commerce Industry, the meeting were positive and forward-looking. Officials from both countries made progress on several key topics. The main aim is to make trade between the two nations easier, faster and more balanced. Ministry stated, “The meetings were conducted in a constructive and positive spirit with meaningful and forward-looking discussions enabling progress on key matters. Both sides agreed to remain engaged to maintain this momentum as they move forward”. During the talks, both sides discussed market access. Talking rounds were also held on non-tariff barriers, safety standards, etc. The two countries also discussed customs processes and ways to speed up trade at borders. Investment promotion was another major focus. Both sides want more companies to invest in each other’s markets. Digital trade and economic security were also part of the discussions. These meetings follow a joint statement released on 7 February, 2026. In that statement, both countries agreed on a plan for an Interim Trade Agreement. This agreement is meant to bring quick benefits while the bigger BTA is still being negotiated. The Interim Agreement is expected to open markets further and help build stronger supply chains between the two countries. The larger BTA talks first began in February 2025. They were launched by US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. .
