mp-govt-issues-bhopal-metropolitan-region-official-notification:area-to-cover-13,000-sq-km,-integrating-2,510-villages-across-six-districts

The state government has issued a notification for the formation of the Bhopal Metropolitan Region (BMR), significantly expanding the capital’s planning and development boundaries. The region will cover approximately 12,098 sq km—nearly 13,000 sq km—and include 2,510 villages from six districts: Bhopal, Raisen, Vidisha, Sehore, Rajgarh, and Narmadapuram. Experts say this marks a major shift in the evolution of Madhya Pradesh’s capital, which is set to transition from its traditional geographic limits into a large, integrated metropolitan region. With this notification, the scope of development will extend far beyond Bhopal district into adjoining areas. Six districts brought under one planning framework Formed under the Madhya Pradesh Metropolitan Region Planning and Development Act, 2025, the new region includes parts of neighboring districts that share boundaries with Bhopal and are likely to witness urban expansion in the future. Bringing 2,510 villages under a single administrative planning system is being seen as the largest such initiative in the state so far. Key areas included in the region Why such a large region was needed The government believes that rapid population growth and industrial expansion in Bhopal were leading to unregulated development. By integrating surrounding villages, a unified master plan can now be prepared for the entire region, ensuring more structured growth. Expected benefits Challenges and Future outlook To manage such a vast region, a high-powered Metropolitan Regional Planning Board will be constituted. However, integrating large rural areas into urban planning may pose challenges related to land acquisition and revenue administration. Despite these hurdles, officials believe the initiative could, in the long run, transform Bhopal into a major economic hub on the lines of the Delhi-NCR model.
