lalit-modi-claims-ipl-losing-₹2400-crore-each-year:says-‘that’s-not-what-we-sold’,-accuses-bcci-of-poor-league-management

The former IPL Commissioner said that the current IPL format is causing a loss of about ₹2,400 crore to BCCI and the franchises every season. As per IPL’s first chairman’s claim, the league is not following the home-and-away structure correctly. According to him, fewer matches are the biggest reason for this. He said, “That is not what we sold.” He said in an interview with Sports Star, “Initially, the plan was for every team to play each other twice. With 10 teams in 2022, there would have been 90 league matches and four knockout matches. However, IPL changed the home-and-away system and kept only 74 matches. This is causing losses to the franchises. That is not what we sold.” He said, “For every match, 50% goes to BCCI and the remaining 50% is distributed among the teams. Consequently, teams are now losing out on 20 games. It is a contractual obligation, given the fees they are paying, to provide them with home-and-away fixtures.” The real value is hidden in the home-and-away format He told Sportstar, “The home-and-away format is where the value lies. If there is no space in the calendar, do not increase the number of teams. It is as simple as that. That is not what we sold. Has everybody signed off on this? I guarantee they have not.” He questioned whether all teams had agreed to this change and said that it would not have happened. This means BCCI would have received an additional revenue of ₹2,400 crore. Out of this, 1,200 crore rupees would go to 10 teams, 120 crore rupees to each team, and the teams would receive a value boost Lalit Modi was suspended in the 3rd season of IPL Lalit Modi was suspended by the BCCI immediately after the final of the third season of IPL in 2010.
