srh-seek-bcci’s-action-over-avesh-khan’s-boundary-antics:sunrisers-unhappy-with-umpiring-decisions-on-klaasen,-abhishek’s-dismissals

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) feel that they have been undone by a few of the umpire’s decisions in IPL 2026, with the Orange Army reportedly seeking the BCCI’s (Board of Control for Cricket in India) action. Among the incidents that have left the SRH miffed are Avesh Khan’s antics at the boundary in SRH’s defeat to the Lucknow Super Giants’ (LSG) on 5 April. SRH, the 2016 champions, have had a mixed start to IPL 2026, with two defeats and one victory so far in three matches. The team, which is being led by Ishan Kishan on an interim basis, will next be in action against the Punjab Kings on 11 April in Mullanpur. What did Avesh Khan do, and why has it become a controversy? This incident in the SRH vs LSG match happened in the last over of the chase when Rishabh Pant, the Lucknow captain, struck a boundary to seal the win for his team when one run was required. However, Avesh Khan, who stood near the boundary, appeared to hit the ball with a bat even before it touched the boundary rope. While that ball, in no way, could have been stopped from being a boundary, social media saw a lot of chatter on this particular incident, with users even saying that SRH should have been awarded five runs as a penalty and saying that the umpires should have invoked Law 20.1 (Dead Ball) and Law 41 (Unfair Play). Klaasen’s dismissal became a major talking point of the IPL 2026 opener. The wicketkeeper-batter was caught by Phil Salt perilously close to the boundary, a catch that many deemed unfair, with claims going about that the England star had come into contact with the boundary cushion. In SRH’s second match, which was against KKR, Varun Chakaravarthy’s catch to dismiss Abhishek stirred controversy. Varun dived in front at deep square leg and took a low catch, which doubts being raised if it was a clean effort or not. Abhishek had unhappily left the field and was even fined for showing dissent. According to Cricbuzz, the Sunrisers Hyderabad is likely to approach the BCCI and express their grievances over these decisions. BCCI’s action against Avesh Khan for ‘abuse of equipment’ This is not the first time that Avesh has come under the scanner for his antics. In IPL 2023, the Madhya Pradesh bowler had thrown his helmet on the ground after hitting the winning runs against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in Chinnaswamy. Although the 29-year-old avoided a penalty, he was found guilty of breaching IPL’s Code of Conduct. “Mr Avesh admitted to level 1 offence 2.2 of IPL’s Code of Conduct and accepted the sanction,” a statement by the IPL read.
