The Indian film industry is about to witness its biggest financial gamble ever. Director Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana, starring Ranbir Kapoor, is not just another movie, it is a massive business project that is changing how the world looks at Indian cinema. With an estimated budget of over ₹4,000 crore ($500 million) for its two-part saga, the film might become the most expensive Indian movie of all time, as indicated by the producer during a podcast with YouTuber Prakhar Gupta. But looking at this colossus and eye-popping figure, it raises eyebrows and forces us to crack our mind whether the producers will ever be able to recover the cost of making this movie. Producer Malhotra had estimated that by the time they would finish shooting of both the parts of the movie, the overall estimated budget would cross the ₹4,000 crore mark. If this really happens, won’t the movie would be a flop as at least the ticket sale collections would never match the production costs? Hollywood movies with highest budget: To put this budget into perspective, lets have to look at the biggest blockbusters in the world. A budget of $500 million (over ₹4,000 crore) places Ramayana in the same league as Hollywood’s most expensive productions ever or even above that. Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015): Currently holds the record for the costliest Hollywood movie with a budget of roughly $447 million (₹2.682 crore) Avatar: The Way of Water: Cost around $350–400 million (₹3,200 crore) Avengers: Endgame: Had a production budget of about $356 million (₹2,492 crore) *Rupee dollar conversion rate of particular movie’s release year has been considered. If the reported figures for Ramayana are accurate, it isn’t just an Indian record-breaker—it would be the most expensive films in the world. How does It compare to Bollywood? In India, Ramayana has no competition. It has doubled or tripled the budgets of previous record-holders: Star cast: Who earned what? A significant portion of this massive budget goes toward the star power and more importantly towards world-class VFX. Here is what the lead actors are reportedly taking home for the two-part epic: Ranbir Kapoor (Lord Ram): As the face of the film, Ranbir is reportedly charging ₹75 crore per part, totaling ₹150 crore. Yash (Ravana): The KGF star is charging ₹50 crore per part, making his total fee ₹100 crore. He is also a co-producer on the project. Sunny Deol (Lord Hanuman): The veteran actor will reportedly get ₹20 crore per part, totaling ₹40 crore. Sai Pallavi (Sita): Known for her powerhouse performances, she is reportedly charging ₹6 crore per part, totaling ₹12 crore. While the risk is high, the makers of this epic cult are banking on world-class VFX and a story that resonates with billions of people not only in India but also globally.
