In Madhya Pradesh’s Jabalpur, five robbers on three bikes looted a collection agent, taking away ₹27,000 cash, a laptop and important documents. While fleeing, one accused’s bike ran out of fuel, and villagers caught him. They tied his hands and legs and thrashed him. Fearing police action, he revealed the names and addresses of his accomplices. Police then arrested the remaining four accused, all residents of Patan and Damoh areas. Police are now probing where else they may have committed similar crimes. Had robbed the collection agent Hemendra Patel (34), a resident of Samna village in Damoh, works as a collection agent for a TVS company. He collects instalments from villages in Damoh and Jabalpur and deposits the money at the office. On the evening of 27 March, Hemendra had gone to Jhagra village to collect payment from Rajendra’s house. His mother told him that Rajendra was not home and would deposit the amount in a day or two. After this, Hemendra started returning towards Katangi Road on his bike. On the way, two youths stopped him and said their mother was unwell and they needed petrol to take her to hospital. Hemendra replied that his bike was a BS-6 model and fuel could not be taken out. Despite this, they forcibly stopped him and tried to take petrol. Meanwhile, two more youths arrived on another bike. All five then assaulted Hemendra, looted his belongings and fled. Bike ran out of petrol while fleeing Hearing Hemendra’s cries, nearby villagers rushed to the spot and began chasing the robbers. A short distance away, one accused’s bike ran out of fuel. His accomplice fled on another bike, but the rider was caught by villagers. Villagers beat him, tied his hands and legs, and informed the police. Katangi police reached the spot and seized the accused along with his bike. During questioning, he admitted that he and four others had carried out the robbery. Accused first drank alcohol, then made the plan Police said that on 26 March, Harsh Barman, Bhagwan Singh Thakur, Chandan Barman (Patan), Hetram Raikwar (Damoh) and Sanjeev Barman (Shahpura) had consumed alcohol together and planned the robbery. They were hiding outside Jhagra village when Hemendra passed by, and targeted him. Attempted to mislead police Belkheda outpost in-charge Rajesh Dhurve said that Harsh Barman initially tried to mislead police during questioning, making excuses like hunger and thirst. However, after strict interrogation, he broke down and confessed. Police have recovered the looted cash, laptop, documents and two bikes used in the crime. Further investigation is underway.
