Bhopal Metro’s underground route has officially begun excavation from Monday, reaching a depth of 24 metres. Using a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), a total 3.39-kilometre-long tunnel will be constructed, including two underground stations. Metro officials said the work on this underground stretch is expected to be completed within the next two years. The Orange Line is currently under construction from AIIMS to Karond Chowk. A 6-km priority corridor runs from Subhash Nagar to AIIMS, where the metro is already operational. The second phase, from Subhash Nagar to Karond, will include an underground section, excavation for which began on Monday. The TBM was launched in the presence of officials and will progress from near Red C Plaza towards Pul Patra. Two stations, length will be 180 meters The corridor will feature two underground stations at Bhopal and Nadra, each approximately 180 metres long. The TBM will create a 3.39-km-long tunnel, after which the metro will surface near Badagaon station through a 143-metre slope. Measurement will be done by PPV The TBM, currently lowered underground, will advance along a 265-metre slope before full tunnelling begins. To ensure minimal impact on nearby buildings, Peak Particle Velocity (PPV) measurements will monitor vibrations, keeping them within safety limits. Second TBM after 50 meters Once the first TBM completes around 50 metres of tunnelling, a second TBM will be launched to work in parallel, speeding up the construction. The underground route and stations are expected to cost around ₹750 crore, with completion targeted within two years. Know… what will be where on all three floors of the underground station The underground stations will be located at Bhopal Railway Station and Nadra Bus Stand, featuring three levels: Normal Temperature Even 20 Meters Below Even 20 metres underground, temperature will be maintained like surface levels using ducted ventilation fans. The tunnel lining will use pre-cast concrete segments to reduce risk of ground subsidence. Fire safety, smoke management, and emergency exits will also be integrated.
