Which is the all-time best team in IPL, he answer to this question always remains entangled in debate. Some rank teams based on trophies while others declare their favourites as toppers. To clear this confusion, we have prepared an all-time ranking based on data from 18 seasons (2008-2025). Also, to understand the changing trends of IPL, we have created a separate ranking of the last 4 seasons, which clearly shows the impact of current form and also a look back to the history of the tournament with only those teams that have played at least 10 seasons are included in the all-time ranking. Understand our ranking process before looking at the rankings We have evaluated teams on four parameters… 1. Match winning percentage: At a competitive level, the biggest goal of any sport is to win. The team that wins more matches will have a higher winning percentage and will get more rating points. Playoff qualification percentage: At the beginning of every IPL season, teams’ first goal is to reach the playoffs. The race to reach the final is between these top-4 teams. 3. Rate of reaching finals: IPL season starts with 10 teams but when it ends, only two teams are remembered. Winners and Runners up. For this, it’s necessary that the team plays in the final. 4. Rate of converting finals into trophies: IPL final is also called a pressure game. Therefore, converting finals into trophies is our fourth parameter for teams. How teams got points in ranking 250 points each were kept for all four parameters. The team leading in each parameter got full 250 points. Other teams got proportionally fewer points based on how far they were behind the top team. This way, combining all four parameters, there are maximum 1000 rating points. The closer teams got to 1000, the higher their ranking became. Now let’s look at each parameter one by one to see which team stands at what position. After this, we’ll see the final ranking… Chennai leads in winning matches, Mumbai close second Chennai has played 253 matches in 18 IPLs and won 142. The team’s winning percentage was 56%, which is better than all teams. Mumbai has won 55% matches. Therefore, the team has 246 points. MS Dhoni’s CSK dominates in reaching playoffs too Chennai Super Kings have qualified for playoffs 12 times. The team’s percentage is 75%. Mumbai Indians have made it to playoffs 11 times out of 18. The team is in second place with 203 points at 61%. Chennai also has the highest rate of reaching finals Chennai Super Kings holds the record for playing the most finals in IPL with 10 appearances. They are at the top with 63% in this metric. The Mumbai Indians has played 6 finals out of 18 seasons. With 33%, they received 131 points. Mumbai is unbeatable in converting finals into trophies Mumbai Indians achieved an 83% conversion rate by winning 5 out of 6 IPL finals. The team ranks first on this scale. Kolkata Knight Riders won 3 out of 4 finals. With 75%, they got 226 points. Both Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals have a conversion rate of 50%, giving them 151 points each. The team has earned 901 points. Mumbai Indians is in second place with 830 points. Kolkata Knight Riders is at third position with 688 points. While Punjab Kings is at the last position with 302 points.
