After a long wait and deliberations, names of aldermen in urban local bodies in Madhya Pradesh were announced on Sunday. Nominated councillors have been appointed in 123 municipal councils across the state. According to the notification issued by the Urban Development and Housing Department of the Madhya Pradesh government, appointments of aldermen (nominated councillors) have been made in a total of 123 municipal councils. The order for these appointments has been issued under Section 19 (1) (c) of the Madhya Pradesh Municipalities Act, 1961. The tenure of the newly appointed councillors will end along with the current council’s term or remain effective until further orders. A maximum of four aldermen have been appointed in each municipal council. Mission ‘Local Body Elections’: Command to Experienced Leaders The BJP is viewing these alderman appointments not merely as filling positions, but as a tool to activate party workers ahead of civic elections. Under this formula, priority has been given to senior and experienced leaders who have a deep understanding of municipal administration. Two main objectives behind the strategy Addressing workers’ discontent: Active district-level leaders who had been waiting for appointments for a long time have been accommodated ahead of the elections. Administrative control: Through experienced aldermen, an effort is being made to strengthen oversight of council functioning and development works. Formula for cities from large to small towns After several rounds of deliberation in the BJP organization, it was decided that 4 aldermen each would be appointed in municipal councils Rules and rights: Cannot vote The main basis for the appointment of Aldermen in the state’s urban bodies is administrative experience and knowledge of the Municipal Act. These Aldermen, appointed on the recommendation of the organization, can actively participate in council meetings and discussions, but they do not have the right to vote. Their term ends with the term of the council. In simple terms, they serve as ‘guides’ to the council, not ‘decision-makers’.
