Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in IPL 2026 might actually be a title contender this year, with a balanced squad that can form the core of the team. The franchise even went through an identity revamp this year, changing the jersey colour theme as well as the logo, on the lines of ‘The Hundred’ subsidiary, Manchester Super Giants. LSG did not enter the IPL 2026 auction for a big overhaul. Rather, the management made tactical and planned changes with a purse of ₹22.95 crore to fill six remaining slots. Apparently, the franchise’s objective was to add depth, balance and match-winning quality to the retained core. They got Wanindu Hasaranga to sharpen the spin department and bought Josh Inglis (₹8.60 crore) to add batting depth to the team. Meanwhile, LSG also signed quality pacer Anrich Nortje (₹2 crore), followed by uncapped Indians like Mukul Choudhary (₹2.20 crore), Naman Tiwari (₹1 crore), and Akshat Raghuwanshi (₹2.2 crore). Ahead of the IPL 2026 auction, the Lucknow Super Giants released key players, including Ravi Bishnoi, David Miller, and Shamar Joseph, to restructure their squad. The franchise also traded out Shardul Thakur to the Mumbai Indians while strengthening their side with the addition of Mohammad Shami and Arjun Tendulkar. With so much quality on their side, can Rishabh Pant finally make a competitive run for the IPL trophy? Let’s understand with the following SWOT analysis. Strengths: Explosive batting with sharper bowling attack It’s not just the squad logo and jersey that LSG have made bolder; they have added depth to both bowling and batting departments. With Mitchell Marsh and Aiden Markram at the top to open, Nicholas Pooran and Rishabh Pant add the necessary explosive power in the middle. Meanwhile, Josh Inglis can be included to add value in the lower middle order, followed by Ayush Badoni, who slammed fifty against Sri Lanka in the U19 Asia Cup final. However, Inglis is not available for the starting leg and Breetzke can take his place. Moreover, the squad can use Ranji Trophy star Akshat Raghuwanshi and Wanindu Hasaranga as per the playing conditions and pitch behaviour. In the bowling department, LSG has Mohammed Shami in steaming form, who bagged eight wickets, conceding 90 runs in the Ranji Trophy semifinal against JK. Notably, it was Shami’s best first-class figures in domestic cricket. With quality pacers like Anrich Nortje, combined with the spin prowess of Hasaranga and Digvesh Rathi, LSG’s bowling does look formidable. Weaknesses: Untested lower middle-order, workload of frontline bowling attack The weakness of the Rishabh Pant led-side lies in the lower middle order, which has not been tested under the label of Lucknow Super Giants. Instead of pointing out the players, the weakness is more about whether the batting can survive tough conditions. If the side continues to put runs on the board even if the upper order suffers a collapse, LSG will prove that they can withstand the storm without putting in a rescue act. Also, for the period Inglis is unavailable, Lucknow must find momentum. The same issue lies with the team’s bowling attack as well. If Hasaranga, Nortje, Shami, Digvesh, and Avesh Khan are in full swing, only then do LSG seem lethal with the ball. Once the team goes for replacements like Mitchell Marsh or Shahbaz Ahmed for the bowling lineup, scoring might turn messy for Rishabh Pant and his title hopes. Opportunities: Become a lethal side in IPL, command absolute domination The balance in the squad that Lucknow Super Giants have ahead of IPL 2026, if it plays out well, they might ruin the title hopes of bigwigs like Chennai Super Kings and even Mumbai Indians. However, consistency is the only hope for the Lucknow Super Giants if they want to run the whole campaign on a high. Rishabh Pant’s men do have the firepower to dominate IPL 2026 and the upcoming edition might just be an excellent opportunity for LSG to establish themselves as a lethal force. For that to happen, Pant has to take onus and lead the batting firepower. He just scored 269 runs across 14 games in 2025, with his highest unbeaten score of 118 against RCB. So he must pace up the innings while not losing his wicket. In addition to it, with Kane Williamson as a strategic advisor, LSG can take advantage on the tactical end. With Bharat Arun in the dugout, one can expect LSG to get their bowling combination right. While quality is in abundance, the mettle of the players will be tested in tough situations. If the team manages to hold its nerve, it can get past the playoff stage well without worrying about only being group stage players. Another issue with the LSG is the number of good players that the team holds. Such an option leads to experiments that might affect the stability. Yes, experiments can go right and that would aid LSG in the long run. But there also remains a chance of team experiments going wrong, which can affect LSG’s campaign big time.
