Delhi Capitals have come close to winning the IPL trophy multiple times. They reached the final in 2020, have played in 2 semi-finals, and have multiple playoff appearances. However, a dip in performance despite starting with good momentum ended their hopes of making it past the league stage in the last edition of the Indian Premier League. But before IPL 2026, during the auction, it seemed the DC management was already aware of their issues and entered with the mindset to fill those holes. First, they added Nitish Rana with a trade for the number 3 spot before the auction. Then, during the auction, the franchise added players like David Miller, Auqib Nabi Dar, Pathum Nissanka, and Lungi Ngidi to bolster specific areas like middle-order firepower and sharpen their bowling attack. As DC march toward another promising season, can they be the dark horse and surprise other franchises in IPL’s 19th edition? Strengths: Strong batting and multiple playing combinations The upper-order robustness is what makes the Delhi Capitals dangerous this season. KL Rahul provides the needed calm to balance firepower with composure, while the management has multiple options to pair him up with, for example, Abishek Porel and Pathum Nissanka. With the century against Pakistan in the T20 World Cup, Nissanka naturally posts a better candidature than Porel. Along with the strong batting comes the deadly spin duo of Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav. Both of them complement the bowling attack, with the DC skipper following a more disciplined stump-to-stump approach while Kuldeep goes for deception and unpredictability. With the addition of a middle-order power hitter like David Miller and a domestic cricket bowling prodigy like Auqib Nabi Dar, Delhi Capitals have all the firepower they need to wreak havoc. T Natarajan can provide sufficient anchor in the death over. Lungi Ngidi, Dushmantha Chameera, Kyle Jamieson, and Mukesh Kumar have all proven slightly expensive at the death, which could hurt them in tight games. Mukesh Kumar and T Natarajan are the only two capped Indian pacers in DC’s squad. Fans will have high expectations from Auqib Dar, who picked over 50 wickets during the Ranji Trophy triumph with Jammu and Kashmir. Opportunities: Chance for Axar Patel to etch his name in the history books Axar Patel no doubt stands out as a player, whether it be with the bat or ball. However, when it comes to tactical parameters, he did not meet those standards last year. This year offers a fresh chance to the Indian all-rounder to guide his team to the IPL glory and etch his name in the history books. If players like Ashutosh Sharma, Vipraj Nigam, and debutant Auqib Dar can forge themselves as the backbone of the team, DC won’t have to experiment anymore throughout the group stage. Threats: Who will open with KL Rahul? Pathum Nissanka might be the best contender to pair up with KL Rahul, but the Delhi Capitals still have multiple players to consider for that role. Though Ben Duckett has opted out of the league to focus on Test cricket, Prithvi Shaw and Abishek Porel are still there to challenge for the opening spot. DC management and the captain must fill this hole early in the tournament to address the batting issue. As the tournament progresses, bowling can be put together. However, if there are no runs on the board, it’ll be difficult for Axar Patel to rotate the bowlers.
