The Madhya Pradesh government has declared 2026 as the ‘Farmer Welfare Year’, aiming to reduce cultivation costs and increase farmers’ income. However, despite these initiatives, the state is witnessing an average of 25 farmer protests every month. During the Assembly budget session, Congress MLA Atif Aqeel sought details from the government regarding farmer protests held between January 1, 2024 and February 2026, including in Bhopal. He asked how many protests took place, how many farmers died or were injured in clashes with police, how many cases were registered against protesting farmers, and how many of those cases were later withdrawn. In response, the Home Department informed the Assembly that around 609 farmer protests were held across Madhya Pradesh during this period. Highest number of protests recorded in Sagar, Khargone second During Chief Minister Mohan Yadav’s tenure, Sagar district recorded the highest number of farmer protests and demonstrations in the state. Khargone district ranked second with 61 protests, followed by Gwalior with 44 protests. Meanwhile, Narsinghpur, Khandwa, and Rewa each recorded 38 protests, while Katni district, near Jabalpur, witnessed 35 farmer protests over the past two years. It was followed by other farmer organisations such as the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) and the United Farmers’ Front (Sanyukt Kisan Morcha), which also held several demonstrations across Madhya Pradesh. During the same period, the Madhya Pradesh Congress and its farmer wing, Kisan Congress, jointly organised around 37 protests in different parts of the state.
